If delay remains, use Steam’s performance overlay to check for network spikes before lowering stream quality or investigating host encoding and game framerate. Input lag can arise at several points between controller input and the image appearing on screen, so changing one setting at a time is the best way to identify the bottleneck.
Where streaming delay can come from
Steam Remote Play sends video and audio from the host PC to the Android device and returns your input to the PC over a low-latency streaming protocol. That path involves the game and host, video encoding, the home network, Android video decoding and display, and the controller. A network problem is only one possible cause. Steam describes the exchange as happening “within milliseconds,” but its product page does not provide a measured end-to-end input-lag figure for Android; treat that wording as a general description, not a latency guarantee. Fix the network path first
Wire the host PC to the router
When practical, connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet and leave the Android device on Wi-Fi. If both devices use Wi-Fi, the stream crosses the air twice: once from the PC to the router and again from the router to Android. That can add wireless contention. Improve Android’s Wi-Fi connection
Steam recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi over a congested 2.4 GHz band for streaming. Move Android closer to the access point, avoid competing traffic where possible, and reduce interference from other wireless devices. Steam notes that 5 GHz has shorter range, so a weak signal at your playing location may be worse than a stronger connection on another setup. Steam Link – Suggested Network Settings

Use the performance overlay to check for network spikes
Enable Steam’s streaming performance graph and watch the cyan network-time line while playing. Large spikes indicate highly variable network time and commonly coincide with stutters or freezes. This is a clue about network variability, not a direct measurement of total controller-to-screen latency. Steam Link Network / Connectivity: What is your network configuration?
Reduce stream load if the connection is unstable
If the overlay points to network variability, reduce the amount of data the stream needs to move. In Steam’s streaming settings, try the Fast or Balanced quality preset, lower the stream resolution, or lower the bandwidth limit. Steam recommends starting with a low bandwidth limit and raising it until hitches begin, then returning to the last stable setting. The tradeoff is lower image quality. Check the host PC and game
Low stream framerate can result from a low game framerate or slow encoding on the host. If the game itself is struggling, reduce its graphics load or resolution and check whether its local framerate improves. If the game runs smoothly but the stream does not, experiment with Steam’s host hardware-encoding options. Results depend on the host GPU, so test the available options rather than assuming one encoder is always faster. Change one thing at a time and retest
- Keep the same game, Android location, and play conditions for each comparison.
- First compare the current network arrangement with the host PC wired to the router.
- Then try a better Android Wi-Fi position or a less congested band, and watch the performance overlay.
- If the network looks stable, change one stream setting—quality, resolution, or bandwidth—before testing again.
- If only one game feels delayed, check its host framerate and graphics load before buying networking equipment.
This method cannot guarantee a particular reduction in milliseconds, but it helps distinguish network variability from host or game performance issues.

Android app and controller compatibility
Steam’s Android Steam Link support page lists Android 5.0 or later and recommends a 5 GHz router. It also names the Razer Kishi among supported controllers. Compatibility can help ensure that a controller works with the app, but Steam does not establish that replacing a controller reduces end-to-end streaming delay. Android Steam Link App
