Choose Steam Link if your PC already runs Steam and you want the simpler setup. Choose Moonlight with Sunshine if you are comfortable installing a separate host app and want a streaming setup that supports modern AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel GPUs. Neither is a proven universal winner for Android latency or picture quality: those depend on the host, phone, settings, and network.

Both apps stream video and audio from a game-running PC to your phone and send control input back. That round trip makes the PC and network part of the experience, not just the Android app. Valve’s overview of Steam Link describes this streaming-and-input model.
Which app should you choose?
Pick Steam Link for the straightforward Steam setup
If Steam is already open on your gaming PC, Steam Link avoids a separate host-software installation. Valve’s Android app supports phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 or newer; the setup instructions call for the PC to be on and signed in to Steam, with the Android device on the same network. Pick Moonlight with Sunshine if you want a separate host route
Moonlight is the Android client; Sunshine is the host software installed on the PC. Moonlight’s current setup guide presents Sunshine as the straightforward route and lists modern GPUs from AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel. Its documented host operating systems include Windows 10/11, macOS 12 and newer (experimental), and Linux distributions such as Debian 11, Ubuntu 22.04, and Fedora 38 and newer. Moonlight’s documentation also describes a legacy GeForce Experience host option with narrower NVIDIA-specific requirements. Do not mistake that older route for Sunshine’s broader listed GPU support.
How to set up each option
Set up Steam Link on Android
- Turn on the gaming PC, open Steam, and sign in.
- Connect the Android phone or tablet to the same network as the PC. Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router.
- Install Steam Link on Android and follow its on-screen pairing prompts.
- Connect a supported controller if desired, then launch a game through the stream.
Valve lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S Controller, DualShock 4 (Android 9.0 or newer), Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile. Other input devices may work without official support. See Valve’s device and setup information.

Set up Moonlight with Sunshine
- Install Sunshine on the PC that will run the game.
- Open Sunshine’s web UI and complete its first-time setup.
- Open Moonlight on Android and select the PC it discovers.
- Enter the PIN shown by Moonlight in Sunshine to pair the devices.
Moonlight recommends a capable wireless router, a strong 5 GHz connection to Android, and an Ethernet connection from the gaming PC to the router for a good experience. Will your controller and other input work?
Both apps support a range of gamepads, but exact compatibility can depend on the controller, Android version, and features you need.

Before choosing based on a specific controller feature, check the support information for your Android version and connect the controller to the phone to confirm it is recognized.
Which has less lag or better image quality?
There is no controlled Android comparison here that establishes a universal latency or image-quality winner. A useful comparison would need to hold the PC, Android device, game, network, resolution, frame rate, and stream settings constant, then report the measurement method. Without that, a claim that one app is always faster or sharper would overstate the evidence.

For either app, begin with a reliable local connection: use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone, and connect the PC to the router by Ethernet if practical. Steam and Moonlight both provide those network recommendations, but your router, signal strength, interference, and PC load determine what you actually experience. Moonlight HDR on Android requires all parts of the chain to support it. The setup guide lists Android 7.0 or newer, hardware HEVC Main10 decoding, and an HDR10-capable display for the Android client. For Sunshine, it lists a Windows host with an HEVC Main10-capable encoder and an HDR display or EDID emulator. The guide also notes possible flashing color artifacts, cases where mouse input may be needed to start a stream, and scaling artifacts when client and host resolutions differ.
