Googlebook is a new laptop category running Googlebook OS, which Google describes as bringing together ChromeOS and Android technology. It supports Android apps through Google Play, but not every app is available; some require a subscription, and custom keyboard apps and launchers are not currently installable from Google Play. Existing Chromebooks are not automatically being discontinued: Google says ChromeOS devices will receive updates through their supported lifetimes, with security patches and regular updates continuing through mid-2034.
What is Googlebook, and how are Android apps used?
Googlebook is a distinct laptop category, not simply a new name for existing Chromebooks. Google describes Googlebook OS as combining ChromeOS and Android technology. On a Googlebook, users can install supported Android apps from Google Play. They can also interact with apps running on a paired phone without installing those apps separately on the laptop. Google’s Googlebook FAQ names Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, BandLab, and Netflix as examples of available apps.
Those examples do not guarantee availability for every user or region. Google says app availability varies, and some titles require subscriptions. Do not assume that an Android app available on a phone will be listed for Googlebook or behave identically on a laptop.
Which Android app types are restricted?
Google Play currently does not let Googlebook users discover or install custom keyboard apps—also called input method editors, or IMEs—or custom launchers. The Android Developers guide says Googlebook supports native system input methods and launchers, and that Google is evaluating technical opportunities to expand API support in the future. Can you use Microsoft 365 on Googlebook?
Google says Googlebook can open, edit, download, and save Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint files. Additional Microsoft 365 functionality requires a Microsoft 365 subscription. The FAQ does not establish that every Microsoft 365 feature is included or that a subscription comes with the laptop. Check Google’s Googlebook FAQ for its current compatibility details.
Can you play games on Googlebook?
Google names Candy Crush and Clash Royale as mobile games available through Google Play. It also lists Counter-Strike 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and Arc Raiders as PC games accessible through NVIDIA GeForce NOW. These are different routes: the mobile titles are available through Google Play, while the named PC games are accessed through the GeForce NOW service, not described as native local installations. Will existing Chromebooks keep getting updates?
Yes. Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education Help page, updated September 23, 2026, says current Chromebook devices running ChromeOS will continue to receive updates through their supported lifetimes under Google’s Auto Update policy. It also says ChromeOS devices will continue receiving regular updates and security patches through mid-2034. That broad date does not replace the end-of-update date for an individual model; check the model-specific Auto Update policy for that device. Will a Chromebook migrate to Googlebook OS?
Some newer Chromebook devices may be eligible to transition to Googlebook OS. Google says qualifying devices purchased today whose ten-year support lifecycle extends beyond 2034 will be supported through a transition, with many offering direct migration paths. Google has not yet shared device eligibility or detailed migration paths, so this is not a promise that every Chromebook can migrate. Consult the announcement page for updates rather than assuming a model qualifies.

What if I opt into extended updates on an older Chromebook?
For eligible Chromebooks released before 2021, Google offers optional extended updates for a total of ten years of automatic updates from the platform’s release. The opt-in has a significant tradeoff: it removes Google Play and Android apps, erases local Android app data, and cannot be reversed. If you do not opt in, automatic updates stop, but Android apps and Google Play remain installed; app developers may later stop supporting those devices. This policy applies to eligible older Chromebooks, not to Googlebook devices generally. Read Google’s extended updates support details before choosing.

Google’s September 23, 2026 administrator guidance says Googlebook’s 2026 launch targets personal consumer use and does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. Google says the first wave of core Googlebook management capabilities is scheduled to start rolling out in the second half of 2027. Organizations that depend on centralized management should distinguish this new platform’s current capabilities from the continuing support for their existing ChromeOS devices. How to decide whether to keep a Chromebook or consider Googlebook
- Check essential apps: Confirm whether each app is available as a Google Play app, works through the web, or is accessible through a service such as GeForce NOW. Do not infer compatibility from its availability on Android phones.
- Check the specific Chromebook: Use Google’s model-specific Auto Update policy to find its support date. Migration to Googlebook OS is not confirmed for every model.
- Consider management needs: If your school or employer requires domain enrollment or centralized fleet management, Google says those capabilities are not yet supported at the 2026 launch.
- Account for subscriptions: Additional Microsoft 365 functionality and some games or apps may require subscriptions. Google’s FAQ does not say those subscriptions are included with hardware.
- Understand the older-device opt-in: Before enabling extended updates on an eligible pre-2021 Chromebook, weigh continued updates against losing Play Store, Android apps, and local Android app data permanently.
