Respond by identifying the exact distribution, release, kernel package and kernel currently running on each affected system; checking the distribution’s advisory for that release and package; then applying the vendor’s supported fix and verifying that it is active. A CVE notice or a newer-looking upstream version string alone does not establish whether a production machine is vulnerable. If the fix requires a new kernel, plan a reboot; live patching is available only for eligible fixes and does not replace ordinary security updates.
1. Establish what is actually running
Start with the production fleet, not the version number in a vulnerability headline. Linux systems may run vendor-modified kernels, and package builds can differ by distribution release, architecture and kernel flavor. The upstream kernel documentation cautions that version numbers for kernels that do not come from kernel.org—including distribution kernels—are not meaningful to upstream maintainers.
For each potentially affected machine or fleet segment, record:
- Distribution and release.
- Architecture and kernel flavor.
- Installed kernel package name and build.
- The kernel currently running, which may differ from the installed package.
- Relevant workloads, kernel modules and configuration that could affect whether the vulnerable component is present or reachable.
Keep this inventory with the incident record. An installed fixed kernel package is not proof that the machine has booted into it.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check applicability against the vendor advisory
Use the distribution’s security notice or vulnerability tracker to match the affected package, release and kernel flavor. Determine whether the specific installed build is marked affected or fixed, and identify the fixed package version or other supported remediation. Ubuntu security notices, for example, identify affected releases and fixed package versions; Ubuntu also publishes OVAL data that can help assess applicability and audit whether security fixes have been applied.
Treat the CVE identifier as a way to correlate reports, not as proof that every Linux system is affected. Kernel.org’s CVE process connects identifiers with fixes entering stable trees, but a system may not use the affected part of the source tree. Distribution-specific kernel changes may also need to be assessed by the distribution. When package status is unclear, follow up with the vendor rather than inferring exposure from an upstream version string.

3. Decide how urgently to act
Set urgency using the vendor’s affected/fixed status, the advisory’s stated impact and the system’s actual configuration. Establish whether the vulnerable component is present and reachable in the workload, and consider the operational consequences of leaving the system exposed versus deploying a change. Prioritize vendor-confirmed exposure and production impact.
There is no universal response deadline or risk-scoring formula established for every production environment by the official sources cited here. Set an incident-specific deadline through your organization’s security and change-management process; do not present a generic number of hours or days as a Linux-wide requirement.

4. Apply the supported remediation
Use the distribution’s fixed kernel package
Deploy the fixed kernel package through the distribution’s supported update mechanism and your normal production change controls. Where feasible, validate it in a representative environment first. Include third-party kernel modules and workload availability in the plan, and have a recovery path if the updated system fails to boot or a workload behaves unexpectedly. Upstream stable-kernel guidance describes the stable-fix process, while security fixes are directed through the kernel security process rather than ordinary stable review alone.
Do not substitute an arbitrary upstream kernel for the vendor’s fix without a deliberate engineering decision. The relevant remedy is the one the distribution supports for the deployed release and package.

Use live patching only when the fix is eligible
For eligible Ubuntu systems, Canonical Livepatch can apply selected kernel fixes while the system remains running. Canonical describes its coverage as selected high- and critical-severity kernel vulnerabilities; some code paths cannot safely be patched live, and a live patch may contain only a subset of the fixes in its corresponding kernel update. Check the current vendor coverage and the status of the specific fix rather than assuming that a service being enabled covers a particular CVE.
| Remediation path | Kernel activation | Coverage and operational scope |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional fixed-kernel package | A machine must reboot to run a newly installed kernel. | Installs the vendor’s package fixes for the applicable release; use the distribution advisory to confirm package status. |
| Canonical Livepatch on eligible Ubuntu systems | Eligible patches can be applied while the current kernel is running; fixes that cannot be live patched require a conventional update and reboot. | Covers only the subset of fixes Canonical makes available for Livepatch. It does not enable APT security updates or cover every update that can require a reboot. |
5. Verify the fix and decide whether to reboot
After deployment, verify both the package state and the state that matters at runtime. Confirm that the fixed package is installed and, for a conventional kernel update, that the system has booted the intended fixed kernel. If using a supported live-patch path, verify the vendor-reported live-patch state for the relevant fix. Ubuntu’s OVAL data can help audit whether fixes have been applied. Monitor service health and record exceptions for machines still waiting for maintenance.

A traditional kernel upgrade requires a reboot before the new kernel is active. Livepatch can help manage maintenance timing for eligible Ubuntu fixes, but it is not a blanket substitute for rebooting: some kernel code cannot safely be live patched, and updates to components such as microcode, low-level libraries or firmware may also require a reboot. Canonical also states that enabling Livepatch does not turn on automatic security updates in APT.
6. If your organization discovered the flaw privately
For a previously undisclosed kernel security issue, use the kernel security team’s private reporting route rather than starting with public issue trackers or mailing lists. The kernel documentation asks reporters to provide the affected upstream version or commit information, a reproducible report and confirmation that the flaw remains in current code. Include a concise impact description, reproduction steps and a proposed fix if available. Distribution-kernel version labels are not useful to upstream maintainers; provide the relevant upstream details instead. The security team may involve subsystem maintainers to analyze and fix the issue.
The kernel security list is for fixing an issue, not general public disclosure. The policy described in the kernel documentation allows public release as soon as an issue is already public. For an undisclosed issue, a short delay after a robust fix may be coordinated for quality assurance and large-scale rollout logistics; the policy cited here describes up to seven calendar days, with an exceptional extension to fourteen days by agreement. These are policy windows, not typical incident-response measurements or a guaranteed disclosure schedule. Check the current policy with the affected parties before setting expectations.
