A two-way radio’s usable range depends on both radios being able to exchange signals through the antennas, terrain, buildings, interference, batteries and settings involved. Advertised distance is not a typical-use guarantee. Before replacing a radio, test in the open, change position, check the antenna and battery, and verify channel and tone settings. If a repeater system is involved, check its coverage and equipment too.

Why two-way radio range is often shorter than advertised

Advertised range describes favorable conditions, not a promise about the distance a radio will cover at your location. Cobra says its FRS range claims assume fresh batteries and no obstructions, giving open water and mountaintop-to-mountaintop communication as examples (Cobra range guidance). In ordinary use, buildings, hills, vehicles and other obstacles can weaken or block a radio path.

Range also depends on the whole link, not just the transmitting radio. A base station may reach a handheld at the edge of coverage, yet the handheld may not be able to send a usable signal back. The FCC explains that simply increasing base-station power may not improve communication unless the mobile unit can return a signal to the base antenna (FCC 03-222). A stronger transmitter at one end therefore does not guarantee a working two-way conversation.

How to troubleshoot poor range, in order

  1. Establish a baseline. Take both radios to an open location, charge their batteries, fit their antennas correctly and test at a modest distance. If they work there but not at the usual site, the location is a likely factor.
  2. Change position. Move away from hills, buildings, bridges, vehicles and metal-framed structures. Try a few yards in another direction or move to higher, more open ground. Small changes in position can improve the path between radios.
  3. Inspect the antenna and battery. Look for a damaged, loose or disconnected antenna and make sure the battery is charged. On a handheld, keep the antenna vertical and clear; do not hold it while transmitting. Replace it only with an antenna approved for the exact radio model. The radio’s current manual should specify compatible antennas and safe use (Harris radio user manual).
  4. Verify configuration. Confirm that both radios are set to compatible frequencies or channels and, where used, matching tone settings. A mismatch in CTCSS or CDCSS can prevent communication even when the radios are otherwise within range (Motorola repeater and radio troubleshooting guidance).
  5. For CB radios, check the CB controls and antenna system. Follow the instructions for the specific CB model: Cobra advises setting squelch and RF gain appropriately and checking antenna SWR. Its guidance mentions a longer antenna only after SWR is good (Cobra CB troubleshooting guidance). These are CB-specific steps; do not apply them as general advice for FRS, GMRS or commercial radios.
  6. If the problem affects a repeater system or persists across a site, escalate it. Check for interference and whether the radios are within repeater coverage. Have a qualified radio technician assess repeater antenna placement, feedline, connectors, configuration and coverage needs.

What symptoms can tell you

What you notice What to check What to try
Both radios work better outdoors or at higher elevation Terrain, buildings, vehicle body, bridges or low ground Move to open or elevated ground and retest.
Range changes depending on how a handheld is held Antenna orientation, obstruction or damage Keep the antenna upright and unobstructed; inspect it for damage.
One radio performs worse than the other in the same location Battery charge, antenna, connector, settings or a radio fault Charge the battery, inspect the antenna and confirm configuration. If the problem persists, seek service.
You can hear a repeater but communication fails Frequency or tone mismatch, interference, coverage, antenna or feedline trouble Confirm programmed settings and have the repeater antenna and cable checked.
A CB radio has poor transmit or receive range Antenna/SWR and CB control settings Follow the model-specific SWR and control guidance; do not assume a longer antenna is suitable for other radio services.

When a repeater may help

A repeater can extend coverage when direct handheld communication is inadequate, provided the radios, configuration and service rules support its use. As one manufacturer’s planning example, Hytera US says direct DMR communication may cover about 1 to 5 miles and communication through a DMR repeater about 30 to 50 miles under favorable conditions (Hytera US range examples, 2026). These are vendor examples, not guaranteed distances or a general prediction for other systems and locations.

  • Don't worry about any problems, we have carefully checked each product, Any questions, please feel free to contact us, will reply within 24 hours;

A repeater will not solve every problem: incorrect frequency or tone settings, interference, weak coverage at the site, or a fault in the repeater antenna or feedline can still prevent communication. Persistent, site-wide trouble is a reason to have the system assessed rather than simply increasing transmitter power.

Choose antennas and upgrades carefully

An antenna is not a universal range upgrade. Use a manufacturer-approved antenna that matches the exact radio, and check the current manual before changing the installation. For vehicle use, an externally mounted antenna may help, but its compatibility and installation depend on the radio and system. Cobra notes that its CB radios transmit at the FCC-allowable four-watt output; that figure applies to Cobra CB radios, not to all two-way radios (Cobra CB guidance).

If a properly configured radio still performs poorly after location, battery and antenna checks, have the device or system inspected. A technician can distinguish an individual-radio fault from a coverage, interference or repeater-system problem.
