Its screen is 1792 × 828 pixels across the whole display, not per eye in a stereoscopic viewer. That makes basic phone-based VR plausible, but the specifications alone do not guarantee current app support, precise fit in a viewer, or a particular image quality.
Does the iPhone XR have a gyroscope for VR?
Yes. Apple lists both a three-axis gyro and an accelerometer in the iPhone XR technical specifications. In compatible phone-VR software, these sensors can provide input for tracking the phone’s orientation as you turn your head. Google describes its Cardboard SDK for iOS as enabling stereoscopic rendering and head tracking, but that describes what developers can build—not a promise that a particular XR app is available or supported today. Orientation tracking is not the same as positional tracking. The cited phone-VR documentation supports head-orientation viewing; it does not establish that an XR in a Cardboard-style viewer can track your position as you move around a room. The XR’s sensors should be understood as evidence for orientation-based use, not as a replacement for a dedicated headset’s full tracking system.
What does 1792 × 828 mean for VR?
Apple specifies a 6.1-inch-diagonal IPS LCD with a native resolution of 1792 × 828 pixels and a density of 326 ppi. Those figures describe the entire phone panel. In stereoscopic VR, the software presents separate views for the left and right eye and applies distortion correction. As a result, neither eye sees the full 1792 × 828 panel as its own image. Google’s Cardboard iOS documentation describes this split-view rendering process.

The exact number of pixels rendered for each eye depends on the app’s layout and viewer configuration. The official documentation cited here does not publish an iPhone XR-specific per-eye resolution, so it would be misleading to treat the panel resolution as a per-eye VR specification.
Is the iPhone XR screen sharp enough for VR?
The specifications confirm the display’s resolution and pixel density, but they do not establish how sharp a particular VR experience will look. The stereoscopic layout gives each eye only part of the panel, and the app and viewer affect the displayed image. No XR-specific per-eye resolution, independent VR benchmark, or motion-latency figure is established by the cited official sources. Use the published display figures as phone-screen specifications, not as a guarantee of VR image quality.

Can you use an iPhone XR with Google Cardboard?
At the hardware level, the XR’s listed gyroscope makes it plausible for compatible Cardboard-style phone VR. Google’s iPhone and iPad Cardboard setup guidance specifies iOS 8.0 or later and notes that an incompatible-device warning may indicate a missing gyroscope. Apple confirms that the XR has a three-axis gyro.
That does not guarantee that every current app works with the XR or that a particular viewer fits it. Before choosing a viewer, check its supported phone width and thickness, how it holds the phone, its adjustment and input method, and whether an appropriate iOS app is currently available. The cited guidance does not verify a specific viewer listing or current app availability.
