For children through Grade 6, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says not to use art supplies that carry cautionary or warning labels. No seal or label makes every use risk-free, so close adult supervision and careful setup still matter.
Start with the package, age range, and warnings
Check the actual package before buying or using a supply. Look for a clear intended use and age range, full directions, and any hazard or caution statements. For art materials, also look for “Conforms to ASTM D-4236” or equivalent wording. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends looking for the ACMI Approved Product seal as another useful screening check. Neither a seal nor an ASTM statement guarantees safety in every use; read the full label.
ASTM D-4236 is a practice for developing precautionary labels based on an art material’s potential chronic health hazards, as assessed by a toxicologist. It is not a test proving that a product is harmless. ASTM says precautionary labeling cannot ensure completely safe use. For children through Grade 6, take warning labels seriously
CPSC advises that art supplies with cautionary or warning labels should not be used with children from pre-kindergarten through Grade 6. AAP likewise advises against products with statements such as “Keep Out of Reach of Children,” “Not for Use by Children,” “Poison,” “Danger,” “Warning,” or “Caution.” Don’t treat an alarming label as something supervision can override.

Avoid donated, inherited, or found supplies if they are not in their original containers with complete labels. An unlabeled product’s ingredients, intended use, and warnings may be impossible to verify.
Choose lower-dust, water-based options when they fit
Health Canada identifies several substitutions that can reduce exposure to solvents or airborne dust. These are practical categories to consider, not guarantees that every product in a category is suitable for every child or task.

For children through Grade 6, CPSC advises avoiding solvents and solvent-based supplies, including turpentine, paint thinner, shellac, toluene, some glues and inks, and some solvent-containing permanent markers. Its avoid list also includes self-pressurized containers, acids, alkalis, bleaches, corrosives, materials that produce inhalable dust, old or unlabeled materials, and supplies containing lead, cadmium, or other heavy metals. Check the label rather than relying on a product’s color, smell, or marketing language.
For slime, Health Canada warns that some do-it-yourself recipes use boric acid, including recipes made with contact lens solution. If making slime, choose a recipe without boric acid; homemade does not automatically mean safe.

Match tools to the child and supervise their use
Glue guns
CPSC advises avoiding high-temperature glue guns and using low-temperature models for children up to age 12. That advice does not make a low-temperature gun suitable for unsupervised use or establish a universal minimum age. Check the specific tool’s age guidance and instructions, and have an adult supervise closely.
Small parts and choking risks
Inspect kits for beads, loose components, and pieces that could detach during use. CPSC defines a small part as an object that fits entirely into the regulatory small-parts cylinder without compression in any orientation; pieces that break off during simulated use or abuse may also count. Certain children’s products with small parts must carry choking warnings, but CPSC lists exclusions that include crayons, chalk, pencils, pens, modeling clay, fingerpaints, watercolors, and other paint sets. A category-level exclusion does not remove the need to consider loose pieces in a particular kit. Follow age warnings and keep small components away from young children. Supervision is essential with any art material or tool. CPSC puts it plainly: “there is no substitute for direct supervision.” Stay close enough to prevent unintended use, especially with younger children, tools, or materials that could be inhaled or swallowed.
Set up the activity to limit exposure
- Choose supplies intended for the child and the planned activity; read all use directions and warnings first.
- Keep food and drinks out of the art area, and offer only a small amount of material at a time.
- Work in a well-ventilated area and discourage children from inhaling dust or fumes. Have an adult handle mixing powdered or very dusty materials.
- Do not mix art products. Health Canada warns that some combinations can produce harmful gases.
- Consider a child’s asthma, allergies, or other individual needs when choosing materials and setting up the activity.
Clean up and store supplies safely
- Wash hands with soap and water after crafting.
- Clean surfaces and tools after use.
- Return materials to their original labeled containers, keeping labels intact.
- Store supplies out of children’s and pets’ reach.
- Watch for unusual reactions. In the United States, CPSC lists Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for assistance.
For Canadian parents, Health Canada’s Arts and crafts safety guidance (dated September 24, 2026) provides handling and product-selection advice. Its poison-centre contact information varies by location; use the number listed for your province or territory rather than assuming one number applies everywhere.

Use regulatory limits in context
U.S. rules add requirements for children’s art materials designed primarily for children age 12 or younger. CPSC business guidance lists a lead limit of 90 parts per million in surface coatings or paint and 100 parts per million total lead in product substrate. These are regulatory limits, not test results for a particular item and not proof that an individual product has been tested. They do not replace checking the package, age suitability, warnings, and instructions.
