Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStart with what you need the laptop to do, the software it must run, and how often you will carry it. Then set a budget and compare only configurations that meet those needs. A useful first step is to write down your three most demanding tasks, required apps and accessories, preferred operating system, portability needs, minimum screen and battery expectations, local storage needs, must-have ports, and whether you need touch, a pen, gaming performance, or creative graphics. This needs-first approach is also recommended in ASUS’s laptop buying guide and RTINGS’ buying guide.
Start with your workload, budget, and required software
There is no single best laptop for every buyer. A student who carries a computer to class each day, a gamer who wants high frame rates, and a video editor working with large local files have different priorities. Begin with the most demanding real task you expect to do, not the most impressive specification on a product page.
- Set a budget. Decide what you can spend before comparing models; a higher specification is worthwhile only if it solves a real need.
- List your three most demanding tasks. Include specific activities such as editing video, compiling code, running engineering software, or playing particular games.
- Check app and accessory compatibility. Look up school or employer requirements, specialist applications, games, printers, storage devices, and other peripherals before choosing an operating system or processor platform.
- Describe how you will use and carry it. Note whether it will stay on a desk, travel daily, or serve as your main computer, and what screen size and weight you can live with.
- Identify practical requirements. Estimate battery needs and local storage, list the ports your existing devices use, and decide whether touch, pen input, or dedicated graphics is important.
Compatibility comes before brand preference or benchmark comparisons. ChromeOS is centered on browser and Android apps; as RTINGS explains, specialist desktop programs and legacy drivers may not be supported. Confirm that your exact applications and accessories work on the exact laptop configuration you are considering.
Choose an operating system and form factor
Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS
Windows and macOS are full desktop operating systems with broad application ecosystems, while ChromeOS is more focused on web-based work and Android apps. RTINGS notes that Windows offers a broader selection of gaming titles and that macOS can suit people already using Apple devices and services. Those are general tendencies, not guarantees that a specific app, game, or accessory will work: check the developer’s current requirements and the peripheral maker’s support information.

If your work depends on specialist third-party software, legacy drivers, or substantial local processing, do not assume a Chromebook will be a suitable substitute for a Windows or Mac laptop. Confirm compatibility before buying rather than relying on the platform’s reputation or a broad category label.
Clamshell, convertible, or detachable
A traditional clamshell is a practical default for many buyers. A 2-in-1 convertible or detachable makes more sense when touch or pen input is central to your work. A larger screen may help with multitasking or media, while a smaller, lighter machine can be easier to carry every day. RTINGS observes that many people find laptops of 15 inches or less easy to carry, but screen size alone does not determine weight or fit: chassis thickness and cooling design matter too.
Match processor and graphics to the hardest task
For browsing, documents, video calls, streaming, and study, a mainstream processor with integrated graphics is often a sensible starting point. Microsoft’s Windows laptop buying guide describes Intel Core i5/i7 and Core Ultra 5/7, AMD Ryzen 5/7, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X families as mid-level options. These names cover multiple generations and models, so compare the specific chip and laptop rather than treating a family label as a performance guarantee.

Editing, engineering, rendering, code compilation, and data analysis can require more CPU or GPU capability. Check the published requirements for each application you rely on; some creative or technical programs may need a discrete graphics processor, while others do not. For gaming, decide based on the games you play, the resolution and frame rate you want, and how much cooling and weight you are willing to accept. Graphics performance is only one part of the experience: cooling capacity, fan noise, display behavior, and real battery use also matter.
Microsoft says the NPU in a Copilot+ PC operates at 40+ trillion operations per second (TOPS) for Copilot+ PC experiences. That is a stated platform threshold for those experiences, not a general measure of laptop performance or a substitute for checking whether a workload benefits from an NPU.
How much RAM do you need in a laptop?
Choose memory for the apps and multitasking you actually do, and check whether it can be upgraded later. Microsoft’s use-case guidance gives 8–16 GB as a general range for light workloads and recommends closer to 16 GB for photo or video editing. RTINGS’ 2025 guide recommends at least 16 GB for most Windows buyers, with very light tasks and some Chromebook use as possible exceptions. For a new Windows laptop, 16 GB is a useful general target; less can be reasonable for genuinely light use or a tight budget if you understand the trade-off and the memory cannot be upgraded.

Demanding games, professional work, and unusually heavy multitasking can call for more. Microsoft’s broad gaming range is 16–64 GB, but it is vendor guidance, not a minimum for every game. Check the requirements of your applications and the exact laptop’s upgrade options before paying for more memory.
How much storage should your laptop have?
Storage needs depend on how many files and applications you keep on the laptop rather than in cloud services. Microsoft lists 128–256 GB as an option for cloud-oriented light use, and 256 GB–1 TB or more for photo and video work depending on the amount of local media. Its broad gaming guidance suggests 512 GB–2 TB or more for a game library; actual needs vary with the titles installed.

Check the capacity and whether the SSD can be replaced or expanded. If you work with large video, photo, or project files, estimate the space those files will occupy and leave room for applications and updates. An external SSD can help when local capacity is insufficient, but it is an additional device to carry and connect.

Compare the display, battery, keyboard, and ports
Screen quality
Resolution is only one part of display quality. Microsoft defines Full HD (FHD) as 1920 × 1080 pixels and 4K as 3840 × 2160 pixels. More pixels can make images sharper, but also compare brightness, reflections, panel type, color accuracy, screen size, and refresh rate. For color-sensitive creative work, color accuracy matters more than resolution alone. Many productivity users can get by with a 60 Hz panel; gaming can benefit from a faster refresh rate, with response time and variable refresh rate also worth checking, according to RTINGS. A high-resolution display on a small laptop may not be worth the extra cost if battery life or price matters more to you.
Battery life
RTINGS suggests aiming for about nine hours or more for a typical school or work day. Treat this as buying guidance, not a guarantee: manufacturers and independent reviewers use different test conditions, and gaming, video editing, simulations, screen brightness, resolution, and refresh rate can all affect runtime. Look for independent battery tests of the exact model that resemble your expected workload.
Keyboard, webcam, and connections
If you type for hours, try the keyboard and trackpad where possible. Check webcam and microphone quality if you have frequent calls. Make a list of what you need to connect, such as a charger, external monitor, USB-A accessory, external drive, headphones, SD card, or wired network adapter.

- 【Versatile Connectivity】Stay connected with multiple ports including USB 3.0 Type-C, USB 3.0 Type-A, HDMI, and a headphone/mic combo jack, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for seamless wireless networking.
RTINGS suggests two USB ports as a reasonable minimum for many users, but port count alone is not enough. USB-C ports differ in charging, data-transfer, and video-output capabilities. Verify the exact laptop’s port specifications before buying a hub or dock, especially if you need to connect a monitor or charge through USB-C.
Compare exact configurations before buying
A product-family name can cover laptops with different processors, graphics, memory, storage, screens, and operating systems. Compare the exact configuration you would buy, not a review of a superficially similar model. For each candidate, check:
- Whether required software and peripherals are supported.
- Processor and graphics performance for your actual tasks.
- Installed RAM and whether it can be upgraded.
- SSD capacity and whether storage can be expanded.
- Display brightness, resolution, panel type, color, and refresh rate.
- Independent battery results under comparable conditions.
- Weight, thickness, keyboard and trackpad quality, and port capabilities.
- Warranty and service coverage, plus the seller’s return terms.
When comparing prices or offers, verify country or region, retailer, model number, configuration, and date. Prices and configurations can change, so a comparison is useful only when it is clear which versions are being considered.
