Choose a 2.4 GHz USB receiver if your particular mouse offers a faster report rate in that mode and responsiveness is your priority. Choose Bluetooth when you want to avoid carrying or occupying a port with a dedicated receiver, and your mouse and device support it. Neither connection is universally better: the mouse, its settings, the host device, USB setup, and nearby radio activity all affect the result.
How the two wireless connections differ
A 2.4 GHz mouse connects to a small USB receiver made for that mouse or product line. Bluetooth pairs directly with a compatible computer, tablet, or phone, so it does not need that dedicated receiver. The comparison is between the mouse’s connection implementations—not simply two frequency bands—and the details vary by model.
Some mice support both. Logitech describes its G603 LIGHTSPEED as offering a 2.4 GHz LIGHTSPEED receiver connection and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Its support guidance says the G603 can connect to a computer, phone, or tablet using either the included receiver or Bluetooth. Other mice may support only one connection type, so check the exact model.
Which connection should you choose?
| Your priority | Connection to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming or responsive cursor movement | 2.4 GHz receiver, if the mouse specifies a faster report rate in that mode | Check the model’s report-rate specifications and available settings. A higher report rate alone does not establish total input latency or guarantee that everyone will notice a difference. |
| No dedicated receiver or fewer occupied USB ports | Bluetooth | Confirm that both the mouse and host device support the required Bluetooth connection and platform. |
| Use with a tablet or phone | Bluetooth, when both devices support it | Check compatibility for the exact mouse and mobile device. Logitech documents this use for the G603; it should not be assumed for every mouse. |
| Several devices or changing situations | A dual-mode mouse | Verify how it switches connections, which hosts it supports, and whether its preferred settings work in both modes. |
| Long battery life | Compare the mouse’s modes rather than choosing by protocol name | Check the manufacturer’s estimate and the settings tied to it; report rate and usage can differ between modes. |
What report rate tells you—and what it does not
Report rate is how often a mouse sends updates to its host. For the G603, Logitech lists a minimum 1 ms (1000 Hz) USB report rate and a minimum 8 ms (125 Hz) Bluetooth report rate. Its setup guidance says receiver performance mode defaults to 1 ms / 1000 Hz, while endurance mode is fixed at 8 ms / 125 Hz; Bluetooth on this model also operates at 8 ms / 125 Hz.

- Long-Range: Reliable, long-range Bluetooth wireless mouse works up to 10m/33 feet away from your computer (3)
Those are Logitech specifications and setup details for the G603, not results from an independent head-to-head test. Report rate is one part of responsiveness; it is not the same as total movement-to-screen or click-to-screen latency. Do not infer that every 2.4 GHz mouse is faster than every Bluetooth mouse, or that a stated rate guarantees a perceptible difference for every person and task.
Battery life depends on the mouse and its settings
Logitech rates the G603 at up to 500 hours in performance mode or up to 18 months in endurance mode. These are manufacturer estimates for that model, not a controlled comparison of Bluetooth against 2.4 GHz. Logitech ties endurance mode to a fixed 125 Hz report rate to maximize battery life, illustrating why the mode and settings matter as much as the connection label.

Interference, receiver placement, and range
A receiver connection can be affected by its placement and the surrounding radio environment. For the G603 specifically, Logitech advises keeping the mouse and receiver at least 2 m from wireless routers or other 2.4 GHz devices to reduce environmental noise. In a noisy environment, it recommends placing the receiver within 20 cm of the mouse. These are model-specific setup recommendations, not universal measured rules.
Logitech rates the G603’s wireless range at up to 10 m (33 ft); actual range is not guaranteed in every environment. Check the specifications for your own mouse rather than treating that figure as typical of all wireless mice.

These instructions apply to the G603 and may not match another mouse. Logitech says its receiver can plug directly into a USB port or connect through the included receiver extension cable. Performance mode defaults to 1 ms / 1000 Hz; endurance mode fixes the report rate at 8 ms / 125 Hz. For Bluetooth pairing, the G603 enters endurance mode and uses its easy-switch button. Logitech also notes that Logitech Gaming Software does not detect the G603 while it is connected over Bluetooth.

What to check before choosing
- Connection support: Confirm the mouse and every intended host support the mode you plan to use. The G603’s LIGHTSPEED receiver requires a USB 2.0 or newer port; Bluetooth requires compatible Bluetooth support. Verify requirements for your exact devices.
- Report rate by mode: Compare the manufacturer’s stated rates and whether settings can be changed for the connection you will use.
- Portability: Bluetooth avoids a dedicated mouse receiver, while a receiver-based mouse requires its compatible USB device.
- Battery claims: Compare model-specific estimates under their stated modes and conditions rather than assuming one protocol always lasts longer.
- Environment: If a receiver connection behaves inconsistently, try the manufacturer’s placement guidance and assess whether nearby wireless equipment is contributing.
