There is no single NPK ratio established as best for every gerbera daisy. For home gardens, choose a complete fertilizer and follow its label; the appropriate feeding schedule depends on whether it is liquid or controlled-release. Gerberas may also need attention to iron and manganese, especially when grown in potting soil.

What fertilizer should you use for gerbera daisies?

Choose a complete fertilizer—one that supplies nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K)—rather than seeking a supposedly ideal ratio. Home-garden recommendations from University of Florida IFAS Extension and Clemson Cooperative Extension focus on complete fertilizer and application frequency, not on one preferred NPK analysis for all gerberas. Follow the product label for the plant and growing medium you have.

How often should you fertilize?

Extension schedules differ, so treat them as guidance from their respective sources rather than combining them into one rule:

Fertilizer type University of Florida IFAS Clemson Extension
Complete liquid fertilizer Once a month Every two weeks
Controlled-release fertilizer Two or three times during the growing season Two to three times during the growing season

These schedules are extension recommendations, not a universal application rate. Product strength, potting mix, soil, watering, and growing conditions affect how a label should be followed.

Sovata® Gerbera Full Diet, Powerful Organic Fertilizer for heavy flowering and fast growth of Gerbera Plants. (200 gm)
  • 🍀Complete Nutrition: Gerbera Full Diet organic fertilizer provides all essential nutrients and active microorganisms needed for full growth of Gerbera plants.
  • 🍀Boost Flower Growth: The active ingredients help increase flower production and support healthy blooming of Gerbera plants.
  • 🍀Balance Soil Conditions: It works to balance nitrogen levels in the soil, improve aeration, and regulate pH - creating optimal conditions for strong root development.
  • 🍀Enhance Microbe Population: Double filtering enriches the soil with beneficial microbes that break down nutrients into a bioavailable form easily absorbed by plant roots.
  • 🍀Prevent Nutritional Deficiencies: Using this all-in-one fertilizer eliminates issues from under or over-fertilizing and ensures Gerbera plants get precisely what they need to thrive.

Check for iron and manganese, too

NPK is not the whole nutrition picture. UF/IFAS advises looking for fertilizer or foliar spray containing iron and manganese. Clemson notes that gerberas can develop deficiencies of these elements, especially in potting soil. If you suspect a deficiency, check the fertilizer label and consider whether the growing medium or care conditions may be contributing before adding supplements.

Why commercial NPK recommendations do not translate directly to home pots

ICAR-CCARI gives a commercial production example of 1:1:1 NPK during early vegetative growth, followed later by 2:1:4 NPK, with 15:8:35 as an example. Those ratios are stage-specific production guidance, not a universal household recommendation. Its frequent per-plant schedule should not be transferred to a home pot without local expert advice.

Research figures can also describe something other than a fertilizer-label ratio. A 2009 USDA-ARS-indexed study tested fertilizer solutions at nitrogen concentrations of 50, 75, 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg/L, sampling plants two, five, and eight weeks after transplant. Those are study treatments for a particular potted-gerbera context, not general home feeding instructions. The same year’s USDA-ARS-hosted article reports recommended leaf-tissue ranges of 0.25–0.7% phosphorus and 3.1–5.0% potassium for pot gerberas; these are measurements in plant tissue, not percentages to seek on a fertilizer bag.

How to choose between fertilizer products

  • Match formulation to routine: Liquid or soluble products are applied more frequently in the cited guidance; controlled-release products are applied a few times during the growing season. Use the product label.
  • Check nutrient coverage: Select a complete NPK fertilizer and see whether it includes iron and manganese or whether those nutrients need separate attention.
  • Match advice to growing context: Home pots and landscapes are not the same as commercial protected production. Do not transfer commercial crop-stage ratios or per-plant schedules directly to household use.
