The most relevant option for an iPhone XR is a Google Cardboard-style smartphone VR viewer, but no specific currently sold model with verified XR fit is established here. Google says iPhones running iOS 8.0 or later can use Cardboard, yet directs buyers to check compatibility with the individual viewer. The XR’s 6.1-inch display also exceeds the 6-inch screen size in Google’s general Cardboard overview, so check a product’s exact dimensions and case clearance before buying.
What kind of VR headset works with iPhone XR?
Look for a smartphone VR viewer designed for Google Cardboard or a comparable phone-based viewer. The phone sits in the holder and supplies the display; this is different from a standalone VR headset that has its own display and computing hardware.
Google’s iPhone setup instructions say Cardboard can be used with an iPhone on iOS 8.0 or later. That is a platform requirement, not a guarantee that every viewer or app works with every iPhone. Check the XR’s installed iOS version and the specific viewer’s compatibility information. Google’s guidance is explicit: “To see whether your phone will work with a specific Cardboard viewer, check the viewer’s website.” Google Cardboard iPhone setup guidance.

Why iPhone XR fit needs checking
Apple lists the iPhone XR at 150.9 × 75.7 × 8.3 mm, with a 6.1-inch diagonal display. Google’s general Cardboard overview describes an enclosure for phones with screens up to 6 inches. Those figures do not prove that the XR cannot fit, because a diagonal screen measurement is not the same as a holder’s usable width and height, but they do mean the generic Cardboard description is not a fit guarantee. Before ordering, compare the XR’s body measurements with the viewer’s supported phone dimensions. Check whether those dimensions apply with a case on or off, and whether the holder leaves the camera and side buttons unobstructed.
How to compare Cardboard-style viewers
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Supported phone width, height and thickness | These measurements determine whether the XR can sit securely in the holder; use the manufacturer’s or seller’s stated limits. |
| Case clearance | A viewer may fit a bare phone but not one in a protective case. Look for explicit case-fit guidance. |
| Camera and button access | The holder should not press the XR’s side buttons or obstruct a camera used by the experience. |
| Lens and focal adjustment | Lens spacing or focus adjustments can affect viewing comfort. Google’s Cardboard design reference specifies 34 mm lenses, an 80° designed field of view and 18 mm eye relief; these are reference-design specifications, not verified performance specifications for every retail viewer. Google Cardboard viewer design. |
| Comfort and phone retention | Check how the viewer rests against the face and how it keeps the phone in place, especially if you intend to use it for more than a brief session. |
| Input method and app support | Google describes a button for compatible Cardboard apps, but controls vary by viewer and app. Confirm that the iOS experience you want is available and works with the viewer’s input method. Google Cardboard overview. |
What to search for—and what not to assume
Use “Google Cardboard VR viewer for iPhone” as a category-level search. It does not mean Google currently sells or certifies a particular iPhone XR-compatible model. No named viewer with explicit XR fit is established here, so treat product listings as candidates rather than confirmed recommendations and verify the exact dimensions on the maker’s or seller’s page.
