To keep a cloud provider from receiving readable files, encrypt them on your device before the cloud sync client uploads them. A client-side encrypted vault is a practical choice for files you update regularly; a provider’s built-in client-side encryption may suit eligible managed accounts. Ordinary encryption in transit and at rest protects data in important ways, but it does not necessarily stop the provider from decrypting it.

What “encrypt before upload” means

With client-side encryption, software on a device you control encrypts files before they enter the cloud-sync folder or are sent through a browser. The cloud stores encrypted data rather than the original readable content. When you unlock the vault or use an eligible provider feature, authorized software decrypts the files for use.

This is different from encryption in transit and at rest. Those safeguards protect data while it moves between your device and the service and while it is stored on the service. For example, Google says Drive uploads and files created in Docs, Sheets, and Slides are encrypted in transit and at rest with AES256. That statement alone does not mean that the customer, rather than Google, controls the keys. Google explains its Drive encryption options.

Choose a method that fits how you use the files

Approach Best fit Key trade-offs
Client-side encrypted vault, such as Cryptomator A folder you want to keep synchronized and use over time The vault encrypts files before cloud storage, but each device and recipient needs compatible software and access to the vault key. Some metadata remains visible to support synchronization.
Provider-managed client-side encryption, such as Google Workspace’s feature An organization whose administrator has enabled the feature and whose users meet its requirements Availability depends on the Workspace account, administrator configuration, and identity verification. Some editing, commenting, preview, and other editor functions are limited.
Password-encrypted archive A one-off transfer, if the chosen tool’s current settings meet your needs Check whether it encrypts filenames and other metadata as well as file contents. The method and settings vary; do not assume an archive hides everything.

For a recurring synced folder, a cloud-oriented vault is usually a more natural fit than encrypting an entire disk. Windows’ built-in Encrypting File System is not available in Windows Home, and local file encryption is not automatically a portable vault you can unlock across operating systems. See Microsoft’s file and folder encryption guidance before relying on it for an upload workflow.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up a client-side encrypted vault

  1. Choose and install a supported encryption app. Get it from its official source and confirm it supports the operating systems and cloud workflow you plan to use. Cryptomator is designed for cloud storage and uses a virtual filesystem to encrypt and decrypt files as you access them. Its security architecture documentation describes that design.
  2. Create the vault and set a strong, unique password. A password protects access to the vault; reusing an account password weakens the separation between your cloud account and encrypted files. Keep any recovery material in a separate, secure place. NIST’s Guide to Storage Encryption Technologies for End User Devices discusses choosing storage encryption and managing authentication and keys.
  3. Unlock or mount the vault, then put files inside it. Work in the mounted encrypted workspace rather than uploading the originals to an ordinary cloud folder. The app encrypts files as they are written to the vault.
  4. Let the cloud service sync the vault’s encrypted representation. Check the cloud folder to confirm it contains vault data rather than a separate copy of the readable originals. Cryptomator says it encrypts file contents and names and obfuscates directory structure, while leaving some metadata unencrypted to support synchronization. Its security target explains what is and is not protected.
  5. Verify access on another device before removing originals or backups. Install compatible software, unlock the vault with your recovery plan, and confirm that files open correctly. Keep an independent backup: synchronization can also propagate deletion or corruption, and encryption does not provide backup by itself.
  6. Lock or dismount the vault when finished. This reduces exposure of the mounted workspace, but it does not make a compromised device safe. Secure the device, its operating-system account, and the cloud account too.

Google Drive’s built-in client-side encryption

Google’s separate Workspace client-side encryption feature is not the same as Drive’s standard transit-and-at-rest encryption, and it is not available to every consumer Google account. Google says a user needs a Workspace account, administrator enablement, and identity verification. For supported file types, its instructions include an “Encrypt and upload file” option. Consult Google’s current setup and limitations for the supported files and steps.

Google describes this feature as adding end-to-end encryption and says it cannot decrypt those files. That protection comes with trade-offs: some editing, comments, preview, and other editor capabilities are unavailable or limited. It can be a good fit when an organization manages the feature and its identity requirements, but it is not a universal setting for personal Drive uploads.

What encryption does not hide or protect

  • Plaintext on an unlocked device: Files are readable while open in an authorized app. Cryptomator warns that malware able to capture passwords or read files in an unlocked vault is outside its protection.
  • All metadata: Encryption of file contents does not automatically conceal filenames, directory structure, file sizes, timestamps, access patterns, or the presence of vault files. Cryptomator’s security target specifically notes that some metadata remains visible.
  • Every sharing risk: Recipients need compatible software and appropriate key access for a separate vault. Anyone who can use an unlocked device may also be able to read its mounted files.
  • Data loss: A vault is not a backup. Keep an independent copy and test that you can restore and decrypt it.

Do not treat a product’s encryption label as a blanket guarantee that no provider or other party could ever access data. The practical protection depends on where encryption occurs, who controls the keys, how sharing is configured, and whether endpoints remain secure.

OneDrive and Windows encryption are different layers

Microsoft describes safeguards for OneDrive, including provider-side and account or device protections, but those should not be confused with a user-controlled workflow that encrypts files before upload. Microsoft’s overview is at How OneDrive safeguards your data in the cloud.

Windows file or folder encryption may protect local data in supported editions, but Microsoft states it is unavailable in Windows Home. It is not, by itself, a cross-platform sync vault for sharing encrypted files among different devices. Check the Windows edition and how encryption behaves after upload before relying on this approach.

Sharing encrypted files safely

With an independent vault, every intended recipient needs a compatible app and a secure way to obtain the password or key. Send recovery material through a separate, protected channel rather than placing it alongside the encrypted data in the same cloud folder. For an organization using Google Workspace client-side encryption, access instead depends on its administrator configuration and verified user identity; check Google’s documented editor limitations before moving a collaborative workflow into it.
