To stream Amazon Bedrock output through Lambda to an HTTP client, a strong default is a API Gateway REST API using response transfer mode STREAM with a Lambda proxy integration. Lambda calls a Bedrock streaming operation and relays chunks in API Gateway’s required format. Choose a Lambda function URL for a simpler HTTP endpoint, WebSockets for persistent two-way messaging, or Bedrock asynchronous invocation when the user can wait for a completed result. First confirm that your chosen model supports streaming in your target Region.

How do you stream Amazon Bedrock responses through Lambda?

Bedrock streaming and HTTP response streaming are separate parts of the path. Bedrock returns model output incrementally; your application must pass those events through a streaming-capable endpoint to the client. A buffered Lambda proxy response does not become a live stream just because the browser or other client reads it incrementally.

  1. Check model and Region support. Use GetFoundationModel and inspect responseStreamingSupported, then verify the current model/API compatibility information for the Region you plan to use. Streaming support is model-dependent. See AWS’s InvokeModelWithResponseStream API reference and Bedrock API compatibility guide.
  2. Choose the Bedrock operation. Use InvokeModelWithResponseStream for model-specific invocation, or ConverseStream when a message-based application benefits from a common conversational interface across supported models. The calling identity needs bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream permission for Converse streaming. AWS documents the Converse API separately.
  3. Configure a REST API response stream. In API Gateway, use a REST API, an AWS_PROXY Lambda integration, and response transfer mode STREAM. The cited streaming documentation supports AWS_PROXY and HTTP_PROXY integrations; it does not establish equivalent response streaming for API Gateway HTTP APIs. See API Gateway response streaming considerations.
  4. Invoke Lambda through the streaming path. The integration uses Lambda’s InvokeWithResponseStream path. Lambda must emit API Gateway’s streaming proxy format: a response metadata envelope, then eight null bytes, then the response payload. The separator must occur within the first 16 KB. Follow the Lambda proxy streaming format precisely.
  5. Relay Bedrock events as client-consumable chunks. Bedrock streaming uses Amazon EventStream. Lambda needs to consume the model’s events and translate or pass their content into the response format expected by the client. Decide whether the browser should receive plain text, server-sent events, or another application format; the service documentation does not prescribe that client protocol.
  6. Test the deployed endpoint without buffering. API Gateway’s test invocation buffers responses and is not a reliable live-stream demonstration. AWS recommends testing the deployed API with curl --no-buffer; see API Gateway response streaming troubleshooting.

With HTTP proxy streaming, API Gateway does not send the response status and headers until it has received all headers. Account for that behavior in the Lambda response and client design; see AWS’s HTTP proxy response streaming guidance.

Can API Gateway stream a Lambda response?

Yes, using the documented API Gateway REST API response transfer mode STREAM and a supported proxy integration. It is not enough to enable streaming only in the browser or to return a conventional buffered Lambda proxy response. The integration and Lambda invocation must use the streaming response format.

Limits that shape the user experience

  • Maximum stream duration: API Gateway supports a response stream of up to 15 minutes. Integration and Lambda timeouts must also allow the intended request cycle to finish.
  • Idle timeout: AWS documents five minutes for Regional and private endpoints, and 30 seconds for edge-optimized endpoints. A quiet period while waiting for model output can therefore matter, especially for edge-optimized APIs.
  • Response bandwidth: API Gateway does not restrict the first 10 MB of a streamed response; content beyond 10 MB is limited to 2 MB/s.
  • Lambda streamed payload: Lambda permits a streamed response up to 200 MB. Its separate bandwidth rule leaves the first 6 MB uncapped and limits the remainder to 2 MB/s. These are Lambda limits, not a replacement for API Gateway’s limits. See AWS’s Lambda response streaming documentation and Lambda quotas.
  • Unavailable buffering features: API Gateway response streaming does not support endpoint caching, API Gateway content encoding, or VTL response transformation. Review the response streaming considerations before choosing it for an API that depends on those features.
  • Disconnects and timeouts: A client disconnect or closed connection may not stop Lambda execution. Set timeouts deliberately and account for continued execution when designing cancellation and cleanup behavior.

Should you use a Lambda function URL, API Gateway, or another AWS architecture?

Choose based on the interaction pattern and the controls the endpoint needs. The AWS documentation describes capabilities and limits, but does not establish a universal winner for latency, throughput, or total cost; those depend on the model, Region, workload, client protocol, and guardrail configuration.

Architecture Best fit Main trade-offs
Bedrock Runtime called directly from a trusted backend The backend can call Bedrock and does not need API Gateway’s public API management features. Check model and Region support. Bedrock uses EventStream for streaming, so the backend may need to translate events for its client. Design credential handling and access control carefully. Bedrock streaming API
Bedrock → Lambda → API Gateway REST API (STREAM) You need an HTTP API front door, application logic or credential isolation in Lambda, and incremental output. Lambda must produce the streaming proxy format. API Gateway’s stream duration, idle timeout, bandwidth, caching, encoding, and transformation constraints apply. API Gateway limits
Bedrock → Lambda function URL A simpler, direct HTTP endpoint for a relatively simple use case. AWS positions function URLs as a simple option and API Gateway as the richer API-management choice. Function URL response streaming is unavailable for functions in a VPC. AWS invocation-method comparison · Lambda response streaming
API Gateway WebSocket → application backend → Bedrock The client needs a persistent, bidirectional session rather than one streamed HTTP response. Default documented quotas include a 29-second integration timeout, 128 KB message payload, 32 KB frame, two-hour connection duration, and ten-minute idle timeout. Large payloads need splitting, and session lifecycle needs deliberate handling. WebSocket quotas
Bedrock bidirectional streaming A supported model and workload need continuous input and output over a full-duplex session, such as interactive audio. Model, API, and authentication support differ from ordinary request-then-response streaming; verify current compatibility before designing around it. Bedrock API compatibility
Bedrock asynchronous invocation The task can run for a long time and the user can retrieve the completed result later. This decouples completion but is not a token-by-token user interface stream. Verify current model and API support. Bedrock API compatibility

Function URL or API Gateway?

For a straightforward HTTP endpoint, a Lambda function URL avoids the additional API Gateway configuration layer. Choose API Gateway when the application needs its additional API controls, such as broader authentication choices, custom domains, throttling, caching, or richer request and response handling. Those controls do not remove the constraints specific to response streaming. A function URL’s streaming limitation for VPC functions is a deployment consideration, not a Bedrock model limitation.

WebSocket or streamed HTTP?

A streamed HTTP response is a one-way answer to a request. WebSockets keep a connection open for messages in both directions, which suits live interaction where the client continues sending input while the service sends events. Their quotas are different from REST response streaming, so do not assume that switching protocols removes duration, payload, or lifecycle limits.

What should you check before deploying?

  • Model, API, and Region: Verify support for the chosen streaming operation rather than assuming every Bedrock model supports it. The AWS CLI does not support Bedrock streaming operations, so use a supported SDK or other compatible integration.
  • Runtime and network: Lambda’s managed runtime response streaming support is documented for Node.js. Python and other languages require a custom runtime integration or Lambda Web Adapter. Function URL response streaming is not supported for functions in a VPC; AWS describes SDK invocation through the Lambda service API with a VPC endpoint as an alternative. Details are in the Lambda response streaming guide.
  • Endpoint type and timeouts: Select the API Gateway endpoint type with its idle timeout in mind, and align API Gateway integration and Lambda timeouts with the expected model response duration.
  • Payload and client behavior: Estimate response size and sustained output rate against both Lambda and API Gateway limits. Confirm the browser or application processes chunks as received instead of buffering them.
  • Disconnect handling and cost: Decide what should happen if the user navigates away or the connection times out. Where possible, make work cancellable or bounded so a closed connection does not leave unnecessary Lambda execution running.
  • Guardrail mode: Select whether early delivery or inspection-before-delivery is more important for the application.

How do Bedrock Guardrails affect streamed output?

Guardrail mode changes when content reaches the client. With synchronous streaming inspection, output chunks are delayed until scanning completes, giving the scan an opportunity to check a chunk before delivery. With asynchronous inspection, chunks can arrive sooner while scanning continues in the background, but inappropriate content may reach the user before it is detected. Asynchronous mode does not support sensitive-information masking. See AWS’s Guardrails streaming behavior documentation.

Which architecture should you start with?

For a browser-facing, one-way Bedrock answer that needs API management, start by evaluating a REST API with STREAM and Lambda proxy integration. For a simpler HTTP endpoint, evaluate a function URL, taking VPC runtime constraints into account. Choose WebSockets only when the interaction is genuinely bidirectional; choose asynchronous invocation when users can retrieve a finished result instead of watching tokens arrive. Validate the model and Region first, then test the deployed path under the intended endpoint type, response size, guardrail mode, and timeout behavior.
