Choose a cloud storage plan by adding up the photos, videos, and other files you need to store, then checking how much of the provider’s quota those files will consume. Next, account for household sharing, your existing devices and apps, and any bundled services you would actually use. US plan prices below are provider-page examples accessed October 4, 2026; prices and availability vary by country and can change.
How much cloud storage do you need for photos and videos?
Start with the amount of data you have now, not a guess based only on the number of photos. Include videos, device backups, and files already stored in the account. Then leave room for future additions so you are not forced to upgrade as soon as your library grows.
- Check current usage. Look at the storage used by your photo library, videos, backups, and other files.
- Identify what shares the quota. Google’s storage quota covers Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail, so email and files can reduce the room available for photos. Apple’s iCloud storage is used by iCloud services such as Photos and Backup; check your own device usage. OneDrive plans provide OneDrive storage, and Microsoft’s plan may also include other services.
- Estimate growth. Consider how often you take photos and videos and whether you plan to add more devices or household members.
- Choose a tier with headroom. Compare the next suitable plan against your current total use and likely growth, rather than buying solely for the current library size.
Provider pages do not give a standardized capacity estimate for a particular number of photos or hours of video. Your file sizes and other account usage determine how quickly a quota fills.

Which cloud storage is best for family photos?
For a household, compare both total capacity and how storage is allocated. Google and Apple describe sharing with up to five other people. Microsoft 365 Family lists up to six people, with 1 TB per person and up to 6 TB total. A shared plan can be convenient, but account sharing does not necessarily mean everyone’s files use one undifferentiated pool; review the provider’s sharing terms and each person’s storage before choosing.

Is iCloud or Google One better for photo storage?
Neither is the universal winner based on the available plan information. Google’s listed free quota is larger, but it is shared with Drive and Gmail. Apple offers smaller entry tiers and describes iCloud photo storage and device backup. The practical choice depends on your current devices, apps, other account data, and the amount of storage your household needs. Compare the plan that fits those requirements rather than treating a larger free allowance or a lower entry price as the only deciding factor.

Cloud storage can store or sync photos and files, and provider pages describe backup-related features, but the word “backup” does not establish that every device and every kind of data is protected. Microsoft advertises photo and file backup across devices; Apple describes iCloud photo storage and device backup. Confirm the specific operating systems, folders, apps, and data types included for your devices before relying on a plan.

- Find out what happens when you delete a file or photo on one device, including whether that deletion syncs to other devices.
- Check how recovery works and how long deleted items remain recoverable, if that feature matters to you.
- Keep a second independent copy of important files if losing a cloud account or a synchronized deletion would be unacceptable. A separate external drive can serve as a local copy, but it is not a substitute for understanding the cloud service’s scope.
What to check before subscribing
- Country and billing: Confirm your local price, currency, billing period, and plan availability on the provider’s page. Prices and features can vary by region.
- Quota boundaries: Check what else consumes the storage besides photos, including email, files, and backups.
- Sharing: Verify the number of people covered and whether storage is pooled or allocated per person.
- Included services: Count app bundles only if they replace something you already pay for or intend to use.
- Privacy and recovery: The plan pages alone do not establish comparable encryption defaults, account-recovery trade-offs, or regional feature availability. Consult the provider’s documentation for your platform and country before making a security-based choice.
