Turn spare cardboard, paper, bags, string, and fabric scraps into something to play with, display, wear, or use in a story. Start with what is clean and available, then let the child choose the project and how to decorate it—none of these ideas is limited to girls.

Gather materials from around the house

Look for clean, intact supplies before choosing a project. PBS KIDS for Parents’ DIY Upcycling Activities collection offers more than 50 ideas organized around common reused materials. Its examples include cardboard houses, paper dolls, paper-bag puppets, and projects made from rolls and boxes.

  • Paper, magazines, greeting cards, and cereal or other small cardboard boxes
  • Paper bags, cardboard tubes, and a larger piece of cardboard for a base
  • String, wool, fabric scraps, or offcuts
  • Crayons, pencils, markers, glue, or tape—use what you already have

Choose a result first: a play prop, a character, a collage to display, or a small woven or threaded creation. Then match it to the materials on hand.

Make a small cardboard-box town

This is the most directly age-matched example in the cited activities: Crayola labels its “Build a City with Boxes” project for ages 8 and up. The activity uses small recycled boxes, cardboard, construction paper, crayons, glue, markers, and scissors.

  1. Gather several small, clean boxes and a flat piece of cardboard for the town base.
  2. Cut construction paper to cover the sides of the boxes. Draw doors, windows, and other details on the paper.
  3. Attach the decorated paper to the boxes with glue.
  4. Arrange the boxes on the cardboard base.
  5. Draw streets, sidewalks, intersections, or parking areas on the base.

Adapt the listed supplies to what is available: scrap paper can stand in for construction paper, crayons or pencils for markers, and tape may work in place of glue. These are practical substitutions, not instructions tested or specified by Crayola. If cutting is unsuitable or inconvenient, choose a no-cut decoration approach or an easier project.

Turn a bag or cardboard tube into a puppet

A paper bag can become an owl or another character, while a cardboard tube can become a puppet or butterfly. PBS KIDS for Parents names these kinds of projects in its reuse collection. The exact materials and instructions vary by linked activity, so treat this as a starting point rather than a single prescribed pattern.

Paper dolls are among the reuse ideas listed by PBS KIDS for Parents; Queensland Government’s “Getting crafty” guidance also includes magazines and fabric offcuts among everyday materials.

Try simple paper weaving or threading

Queensland Government’s general craft guidance lists paper or card, cardboard, string or wool, magazines, fabric offcuts, and scissors as everyday materials. It describes threading items such as paper strips, greeting-card pieces, fabric, straws, pasta, or beads onto string, cord, or wool. For paper weaving, alternate paper strips over and under one another; this is a simple adaptation of the listed paper materials, not a quoted step-by-step project from the guidance.

Check materials and tools before starting

Use clean, intact packaging. Avoid sharp edges and containers that may have held cleaners or other hazardous substances. Crayola’s indexed Consumer Craft Safety Guide is dated September 2012, and the PDF could not be opened; its caution is useful to note, but it should not be treated as current regulator guidance.

There is no single supervision level established for every child or craft. Use adult judgment for scissors, needles or bodkins, hot tools, paint preparation, and any material with a warning label or uncertain history. Queensland Government’s materials guidance is general early-childhood advice, not specific safety guidance for ages 8–12.
