If the iPhone is frozen or the display is black, use the force-restart steps for your model. If touch still fails after these checks, arrange a service inspection; symptoms alone do not establish the cause.
First, identify what is happening
Notice whether the display is visible while touches fail, whether touch works only intermittently or in part of the screen, or whether the display is black and the phone appears frozen. Apple’s touchscreen troubleshooting guidance addresses screens that are overly sensitive or respond intermittently. A black or unresponsive phone is addressed by Apple’s restart guidance. These symptoms alone do not identify a specific hardware fault.
Try the low-risk screen checks
- Restart the iPhone. If touch works well enough, turn the phone off and back on. If it is frozen or the display is black, use the model-specific force restart below.
- Clean and dry the screen. Apple advises making sure the screen is clean and free of debris or water. A microfiber screen-cleaning cloth can help with this step, but it is only a cleaning aid—not a fix for a damaged display. Do not apply liquid or use a cleaning method unless it is supported by your device’s care instructions.
- Disconnect accessories. Unplug Lightning or USB-C accessories, then check whether touch response improves. If it does, Apple suggests trying another outlet, cable, or charger.
- Remove the case and screen protector. Test the screen without them to see whether either is interfering with touch response.
These are Apple’s recommended checks for an overly sensitive or intermittently responsive screen. Apple’s touchscreen troubleshooting guidance is the reference for this procedure.
Force restart a frozen or black-screen iPhone
A force restart is for a phone that is frozen or has a black screen; it is not a touchscreen calibration step. Choose the sequence for your iPhone family. Apple’s current model-specific instructions are on its restart an unresponsive iPhone page.

iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone models with Face ID
- Quickly press and release the volume-up button.
- Quickly press and release the volume-down button.
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus
Press and hold the volume-down button and the side button together until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 6s or earlier
Press and hold the Home button and the side or top button together until the Apple logo appears.

If the iPhone will not turn on, Apple advises charging it for one hour and then trying again. This advice applies to a phone that will not turn on, not to a screen that simply needs touch troubleshooting.

If touch remains unresponsive after the basic checks, Apple says the device may need service. This is especially relevant if the display is visibly damaged or the problem persists, but a technician needs to inspect the device to assess it.

Apple lists in-person service at a Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider, as well as mail-in service. Apple says it needs to inspect the product to provide a personalized estimate; Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees and provide their own estimates. There is no model-independent repair price established by these sources. Check Apple’s iPhone screen service options for current details in your region.
Apple states that its service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining term of the Apple warranty, whichever is longer. Warranty coverage, accidental-damage coverage, AppleCare benefits, consumer-law rights, fees, and service availability depend on the device and location. Confirm the applicable terms for your region before authorizing service.
