First find out which updates stopped: the app’s, the service’s, the phone’s operating system’s, or the manufacturer’s security updates for that model. These are separate support streams. A phone can still work after support ends, but it may no longer receive patches for newly discovered weaknesses. Check official developer and manufacturer information, back up your data, and move through the provider’s official migration route if the app or device is no longer supported.

Why has my secure app stopped getting updates?

A pause in updates does not by itself prove that an app has been abandoned. It may reflect a fixable download problem, a change in the developer’s release schedule, or the end of support. Check the app store listing for its last-update information and any developer notices, then consult the developer’s official support site or announcements for maintenance status and any supported replacement. The UK government’s app-store and developer code describes information and security-update responsibilities, but it is policy guidance, not proof that every store or developer complies: Code of practice for app store operators and app developers.

Rule out a stuck update

If the developer still supports the app and an update is available, check the phone’s automatic-update settings, Wi-Fi and power, available storage, and whether the device is too far behind to install the update. Restart the phone if required. Back up before a substantial update. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s guidance on keeping devices and software up to date covers common causes of update problems.

How do I know whether the phone or just the app is out of date?

Check each component separately. The NCSC treats the operating system and installed apps as distinct software types, and recommends checking that important software remains supported. An app receiving updates does not prove the phone is patched; a patched phone does not prove the app is supported.

  • App: Check the official app-store listing, developer notices, and developer support pages for update history, current support status, and any replacement or migration instructions.
  • Operating system: Check the phone’s settings for its OS version and security-update status, then compare that information with current support information for the OS and device.
  • Phone model: Look up the exact model on the manufacturer’s support page, including the stated security-update support period or end date. Do not assume that another model in the same product family has the same end date.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre defines end of support as when a device, software, or system no longer receives updates or technical support. A product may continue to function, but without updates it can become more exposed to cyberattacks: End of support.

Is it safe to keep using an app or phone that no longer gets updates?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer: the risk depends on what is unsupported and what you use it for. An unsupported product may still work, but newly discovered weaknesses may remain unpatched. That does not mean every unsupported app has been hacked or that a breach is inevitable. The NCSC says there is no risk-free way to continue using an obsolete product and identifies stopping use as the fully effective mitigation: Obsolete products.

While you arrange a change, reduce exposure rather than treating precautions as a fix. Avoid using the unsupported app or phone for sensitive accounts or important data where practical. Do not open unexpected links or attachments or install unnecessary software; keep the phone locked. Where practical, disconnect an unsupported product from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the internet, and other networks. These steps may reduce the likelihood or impact of a problem, but they cannot supply missing security patches.

What should I use instead?

Use an alternative only when the developer or service provider identifies it as an official, supported option, and confirm that it is currently maintained. The right choice depends on which part has lost support:

  • If the app is unsupported but the phone is supported: Find a maintained app or service. Replacing the phone alone will not make the original app receive updates.
  • If the phone’s operating system or model is unsupported: A phone with current manufacturer security support is the relevant hardware replacement. Verify support for the exact model before buying; support periods vary.
  • If there is no supported alternative or trustworthy migration route: Contact the provider and ask how to preserve records or move critical communication or authentication. Use an official export if available, then stop using and remove the unsupported app when you can do so without losing access to an account or essential data.

Do not install unofficial app downloads or purported security-update packages. For a work-managed phone or service, ask your IT manager to assess access and migration rather than making changes that could disrupt the organisation’s controls.

How do I move my account and data?

The exact steps depend on the app or service; do not assume that reinstalling an app transfers its data or authentication. Before changing apps, accounts, or phones, back up the phone and relevant app data, then check the developer’s official instructions for export, migration, or account transfer. Make sure you can recover the account and set up authentication on the destination before deleting the old app or losing access to it. The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s mobile-phone security guidance covers backups, updates, and official app stores.

  1. Back up the phone and any app data the developer says can be backed up or exported.
  2. Read the provider’s official export or migration instructions; contact support if the route is unclear.
  3. Confirm the destination app or service is supported and install it only through an official app store or provider route.
  4. Complete account recovery and authentication setup on the destination and verify that important data or access has transferred.
  5. Only then remove the old app or retire the old phone. If the provider offers no reliable migration route, preserve what you can through official means and ask the provider how to proceed.

Do I need a new phone?

Only if the phone’s operating system or the device itself is no longer supported, or it otherwise cannot run a supported option you need. If only the app has stopped receiving updates, first look for a maintained alternative for your current supported phone. Before purchasing, verify the exact model’s security-update support period with its manufacturer; support duration and update frequency vary. The FTC’s 2018 discussion of variation was based primarily on information requested from eight device manufacturers in May 2016, so it is historical context rather than a current list of support dates: FTC recommendations on mobile-device security updates.

When retiring an old phone, remove personal information and reset it before selling or giving it away, as the Australian Cyber Security Centre advises in its mobile-phone guidance.
