You can keep Do Not Disturb on and still allow selected people, calls, and app alerts through. On iPhone, configure the Do Not Disturb Focus under Settings > Focus. On Android, configure the mode’s notification filters; menu names vary by phone and Android version.
Choose what counts as important
Set up people and apps separately. That way, you can allow calls from family without turning on every app notification, or allow a work messaging app without letting every caller interrupt you.
- People: choose specific contacts or a supported call group, and decide whether repeat calls should ring.
- Apps: allow only the apps whose alerts you need during quiet time.
- Other interruptions: review alarms and any time-sensitive or critical alerts offered by your phone.
Before changing settings, identify your phone and operating-system version. Labels and available options can differ, especially across Android manufacturers.
Allow selected calls and notifications on iPhone
- Open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb.
- Under People, add the contacts you want to reach you. Review the call options and enable Allow Repeated Calls if you want a second call from the same person to bypass the Focus.
- Under Apps, add only the apps allowed to notify you while Do Not Disturb is active. If available and appropriate, enable Time Sensitive Notifications for apps whose immediate alerts matter.
- For a specific contact whose ringtone or text tone must sound even when notifications are silenced, open that person’s contact card, choose Edit, review the ringtone or text tone, and enable Emergency Bypass for the relevant sound.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb and check its schedule or duration so it is active when you expect.
Apple’s current iPhone User Guide, identified as the iOS 27 edition, says the repeated-call exception allows two or more calls from the same person within three minutes. Exact labels and availability can vary with iOS version, device, language, or region. See Apple’s instructions for allowing or silencing notifications for a Focus.

You can optionally share Focus Status. When enabled, people contacting you may see that your notifications are silenced; this reports your status and does not guarantee that someone will respond to an urgent message.
Allow selected calls and notifications on Android
- Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb, choose the mode, and open Notification filters.
- Under People, set which calls, messages, or conversations can interrupt you. Choose the people or categories that fit your needs.
- Under Apps, allow only the apps whose notifications should get through.
- Review Alarms and other interruptions separately, then check the mode’s duration or schedule and enable it.
Google’s Android Help says Allow repeat callers can let a second call from the same person through when it arrives within 15 minutes. The option is distinct from Apple’s three-minute rule. Some steps require Android 14 or newer, and settings vary by phone maker. If your menus differ, search Settings for “Do Not Disturb” or use your manufacturer’s instructions. Know what emergency exceptions do
On iPhone, Emergency Bypass is a contact-specific option for that person’s ringtone or text tone when notifications are silenced. It is not the same as allowing an app’s notifications generally.
Google’s Android guide notes that critical system notifications, such as security notifications, cannot be blocked. That is different from Apple’s contact-level Emergency Bypass; do not assume either behavior is a universal emergency-calling guarantee.

Check why something did or did not get through
- An important call was silenced: confirm Do Not Disturb is configured to allow that caller or call group. If relying on repeat calls, check that the option is enabled and note the platform’s documented interval.
- An app alert was silenced: add the app to the allow-list, or review its time-sensitive setting on iPhone if offered.
- An unexpected call rang: review allowed people and repeat-caller settings.
- An unexpected app alert appeared: check the app allow-list and, on iPhone, whether time-sensitive notifications are enabled.
- The mode was not active when expected: verify the selected Focus or mode is on and check its schedule or duration.
After configuring the exceptions, test with a trusted person or a notification from an allowed app while Do Not Disturb is on. If the result differs from what you intended, review the relevant people, app, or interruption filter rather than disabling Do Not Disturb altogether.
