To clear ordinary browser cache, delete Cached images and files in Chrome or Edge; you do not need to delete cookies. To clear Windows SSL state, use the separate Clear SSL State control in Internet Options. These actions remove different data, and neither guarantees that a connection or certificate error will be fixed.
Choose what you need to clear
- Cached images and files: Local copies of page content kept to help sites load faster. Clear this for a general cache refresh.
- Cookies and site data: Information websites use for sign-ins and preferences. Deleting it can sign you out or reset site settings; it is not required to clear cached files.
- Windows SSL state: Session state cleared through Windows Internet Options. This is separate from either browser’s cached-files setting.
Use the narrowest action that fits the problem. Leave passwords, autofill, history, and other categories unselected unless you intend to remove them.
Clear cached files in Chrome
- Open Chrome and open Delete browsing data from the browser menu. As a shortcut, enter “Delete browsing data” in the address bar and choose the action chip.
- Choose a time range, such as Last hour or All time.
- Select Cached images and files. Select cookies or other categories only if you also intend to delete them.
- Select Delete data.
Google describes cached images and files as text and images retained from visited pages to help them open faster. Cookies and site data are separate. If you delete cookies while signed in with sync enabled, some deleted data may also be removed from other devices and your Google Account. Google says deleting cookies while signed in refreshes Google cookies that keep you signed in; to delete Google cookies, sign out of Chrome first. Clear cached files in Microsoft Edge
- Open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear.
- Choose a time range.
- Select Cached images and files. Select cookies or other categories only if intended.
- Select Clear now.
Microsoft describes cached images and files as local copies of pages, images, and other media used to load content faster on a later visit. Cookies and other site data are distinct and may include sign-in details, preferences, location, or media licenses; deleting cookies may sign you out of most sites. The cited Edge steps apply to desktop Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels can vary by version and language. See Microsoft’s Edge browsing-data instructions.

Decide whether Edge deletion affects synced devices
Before clearing data in Edge, decide whether the deletion should apply only to this device or to synced devices. Microsoft’s current guidance says to turn sync off for current-device-only deletion. With sync on and the user signed in, synced items are cleared across synced devices. The time range and selected categories still determine what is removed. Review Microsoft’s instructions for deleting Edge browsing data before proceeding.
Clear SSL state in Windows separately
- Open Internet Options in Windows.
- Select the Content tab.
- Select Clear SSL State.
This route is described in a Microsoft-hosted community answer about Edge 81 from 2020, not in a current official Chrome or Edge how-to. The answer characterizes the action as clearing session state, not deleting a certificate. Treat it as a distinct Windows troubleshooting step, not as another way to clear browser cache, and do not assume it will resolve an SSL error. See the Microsoft-hosted Q&A answer.

If the problem remains
Clearing cached files may cause a page to fetch images and other content again, so it can seem slower on the next visit. If the original issue persists, continue troubleshooting rather than assuming cached data caused it. An SSL certificate or server-side problem, for example, is not established as a cache problem merely because clearing cache did not help. Google’s Chrome connection troubleshooting guide includes other checks, such as whether firewall or antivirus software is interfering.
Remove data for one site instead
If the issue concerns one site’s cookies or stored data, both browsers provide ways to remove data for an individual site. This can avoid clearing cookies for every site. See Google’s site-data guidance and Microsoft’s Edge instructions.
