Before you leave, check the service’s travel rules for your home country and destination, then download the specific movie in its app if your plan and device support offline viewing. Downloads are a useful backup, not a guarantee: services set different limits on eligible titles, devices, plans, and how long downloads remain available.
Will your streaming subscription work abroad?
Often, you can still use a streaming service while traveling, but you may not see the same catalog you see at home. Netflix says each country has its own catalog of original and licensed titles. Disney+ says availability varies by location, and Amazon says Prime Video members abroad can stream selected titles, with the selection subject to change.
That means having an active subscription does not guarantee that a particular movie will be available in your destination. Check the exact title and the service’s current travel guidance for your origin and destination before relying on live streaming. Netflix’s catalog and account-country guidance, Netflix’s travel guidance, Disney+ location availability, and Prime Video’s guidance for watching abroad explain the services’ policies.
How to prepare a movie for a trip
- Identify your trip details. Note the account’s home country, destination, travel dates, streaming service, and the movie you want to watch. Availability rules can depend on both origin and destination.
- Check the title and current travel rules. Look in the service’s app and official help guidance. Confirm whether the movie is available to stream at your destination or can be downloaded on your account.
- Check your plan and device. Downloading may be limited to particular subscriptions and supported phones or tablets. Confirm eligibility in your account and app rather than assuming that every device or plan allows downloads.
- Download before departure. Use home Wi-Fi where possible, and choose a lower download quality if storage space or mobile data is a concern. Then open the app’s Downloads area and confirm the movie appears there.
- Check any renewal or expiration conditions. Some downloads need periodic internet access to remain active. Reconnect the device before departure if the service requires it, and check the service’s current rules for the movie you downloaded.
What to expect from Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video
| Service | Watching abroad | Offline viewing and important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Catalogs differ by country. Netflix says an account’s country cannot be changed unless the subscriber moves. Its travel guidance says title selection and download choices, including audio and subtitles, may differ outside the signup country. | Download availability and choices may differ while traveling. Netflix’s help guidance also describes connecting monthly from the main viewing place for some second-home or frequent-travel situations; check the current guidance for your account. |
| Disney+ | Content availability varies by location. Disney+ recommends downloading titles before travel if you want to watch while away. | Disney+’s guide, revised January 9, 2026, says downloads require a Premium plan or Premium bundle and are available on supported phones or tablets, not TVs, computers, or Windows 10/11 tablets. The device must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active. |
| Prime Video | Prime members abroad can stream selected titles, and the selection may change. Amazon says EU residents traveling within the EU have access to the same titles available at home; outside the EU, its guidance says EU residents can stream and download Amazon Originals. | Amazon says compatible devices can download titles before travel for offline viewing. Confirm the rules for your country pair and device in current local guidance. |
These are service policies, not a universal guarantee for every title or itinerary. For Disney+, confirm current plan names and compatible devices in your account: the download guide’s terms can change. Its practical workflow is to save selected titles in the app on a phone or tablet and play them from the Downloads tab. Disney+’s download guide also recommends checking account status before travel and using Wi-Fi-only downloads or lower quality to manage data and storage.

Can you watch a downloaded movie on a plane?
Usually, offline viewing is the reason to download before a flight, but do not assume that a title will stay playable indefinitely or in every situation. The service must support downloads for your plan and device, and the title must be eligible. Some services also require periodic reconnection. For Disney+, the device needs an internet connection at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active, according to its guide revised January 9, 2026.
Before traveling, verify that the movie is listed in the app’s Downloads area and that the device can open it. If your trip is long or you expect to be offline for an extended period, check the service’s current expiration and reconnection rules before you leave.

Why is a movie missing when you travel?
Streaming catalogs are affected by location, so a movie available at home may not be licensed or offered in the country you are visiting. A service may also offer different title selections or download options while you are abroad. If a movie is missing, check the service’s destination-country catalog and travel guidance; an active subscription alone does not establish that the title is available there.
A VPN is not a reliable way to preserve your home catalog. Netflix says VPN use hides your region and allows only titles available globally, rather than guaranteeing access to the catalog from your home country.

Netflix and frequent travel or a second home
Netflix’s travel help guidance discusses connecting monthly from the main viewing place for second-home or frequent-travel situations. Because account circumstances and the live help page can change, check Netflix’s current “Using Netflix outside of your home” guidance for your account rather than treating this as a rule that applies identically to every trip.
