You can’t conclusively identify an iPhone touchscreen fault as software or hardware with a home test. Instead, try Apple’s reversible checks and note what changes: improvement after a restart is a clue, while improvement after disconnecting an accessory or removing a case or protector points toward that condition. None of these results proves the cause. If the screen still fails after the checks, Apple says you may need service.
How to check why your iPhone screen is not responding to touch
Work through these checks in order, testing the screen after each one. Change one condition at a time so you can tell what, if anything, made a difference. Apple recommends these steps for a screen that responds intermittently or is overly sensitive.
- Restart the iPhone. Note whether touch works normally afterward and how long any improvement lasts. A change after restarting means the restart changed the behavior; it does not rule out a developing hardware problem.
- Clean and dry the screen. Check for debris or water, then test touch again.
- Disconnect Lightning or USB-C accessories. If touch improves, try a different outlet, cable, or charger to narrow down whether the accessory or power setup is involved. This does not establish that the display itself is defective.
- Temporarily remove the case and screen protector. Test the screen without them. This checks whether those items may be affecting touch; it is not a reason by itself to buy a replacement protector.

What the results can—and cannot—tell you
If restarting appears to fix it
A restart may have cleared a temporary software state, but that is only a possible explanation. Record whether the problem returns and when; a brief improvement does not prove the screen is free of a hardware fault.

If touch improves without an accessory, case, or protector
The change makes the removed item or setup worth checking. For an accessory-related change, compare another outlet, cable, or charger. The result does not identify a specific defect or prove that the iPhone display is faulty.
If only one app seems affected
Write down the app name and check whether other screens respond. That information may help explain the symptom, but app-specific behavior alone is not proof of a software fault.

If the problem persists
Persistent dead areas, missed touches, or a screen that remains unresponsive after these checks warrant professional assessment. A visible crack is not required to establish that a hardware fault exists, and an uncracked screen does not prove the cause is software. The cited Apple guidance does not prescribe updating iOS, restoring the iPhone, or installing a utility as a way to distinguish touchscreen hardware from software faults.
