Start with a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth and wipe gently. If that does not remove the marks, check the instructions for the exact phone or screen protector before using moisture or any cleaner. When the maker allows liquid, put a small amount on the cloth—not directly on the screen—and keep it away from openings.
First identify which surface is matte
“Matte screen” can mean textured or coated glass built into a phone, or a separate matte screen protector. Those surfaces may have different care rules. Apple, for example, discusses textured matte glass on some iPhone models, while Belkin’s cleaning advice applies specifically to its Screen Skinz protector. Check the phone or protector maker’s instructions for the product you have; Corning also advises contacting the device maker because screen specifications and coatings vary (Apple; Belkin; Corning).
How to clean it safely
- Check the maker’s directions. Confirm whether they allow moisture or a disinfectant on that exact surface. If the guidance is unclear, use a dry cloth rather than guessing at a chemical.
- Prepare the phone. Follow the device maker’s instructions about powering it down and disconnecting cables. Samsung advises turning off a Galaxy phone and removing its case and cables before cleaning (Samsung).
- Wipe gently with microfiber. Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and light pressure. Apple recommends a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth for iPhone cleaning; ASUS recommends a clean microfiber cloth for LCD/OLED panels (Apple; ASUS).
- Add moisture only if permitted. Lightly dampen the cloth with the liquid specified by the maker. ASUS permits a small amount of purified water on a cloth for its panel-cleaning guidance. Do not spray the phone or screen directly, and do not let liquid enter ports, speakers, buttons, or other openings (ASUS; Samsung).
- Dry without scrubbing. If needed, use a second clean microfiber cloth to dry the surface. Do not switch to a paper towel, abrasive material, or hard rubbing to tackle a stubborn mark; Apple warns that abrasive materials can further diminish its coating and may scratch glass, and ASUS cautions that excessive force can damage a panel or leave scratches (Apple; ASUS).
Can you use alcohol on a matte phone screen?
There is no universal yes or no: it depends on the phone’s surface and the cleaner instructions for that specific device or protector. ASUS says to avoid alcohol- or ammonia-based cleaners on the LCD/OLED panels covered by its guidance. Apple permits certain specified wipes for gentle disinfection of iPhone exterior surfaces, subject to its cautions, and Samsung gives defined disinfectant instructions for supported glass, ceramic, and metal surfaces. Those allowances do not establish that alcohol is safe for every matte coating or aftermarket protector (ASUS; Apple; Samsung).
Apple’s general instruction is: “Don’t use cleaning products unless following the instructions for disinfecting your iPhone.” Use its disinfectant directions only for the iPhone surfaces and conditions they cover, not as a general rule for matte screens.

What to do if marks or stickiness remain
Do not escalate to solvents, repeated scrubbing, or stronger pressure unless the relevant maker’s instructions specifically allow it. The guidance here does not establish one cleaner that is safe for all matte screens. If the matte finish comes from a protector, consult that protector’s care instructions; if a protector remains sticky, Huawei’s support guidance discusses replacement as an option (Huawei). For persistent residue on built-in glass, ask the phone maker for model-specific advice.
