UPS systems and batteries bridge the immediate interruption; a longer outage also requires enough stored energy or a dependable way to generate power for the required duration. The right design depends on the facility’s critical load, outage risk, fuel and grid access, site constraints and emissions goals.
Why backup power needs more than one layer
Data centers run continuously, and large, concentrated loads can affect the grids serving them. The U.S. Department of Energy says projections for data-center electricity demand continue to evolve as AI use and efficiency change. That makes it important to distinguish a facility’s immediate ride-through needs from the resources that can sustain it through a longer outage. DOE’s overview of clean-energy resources for data-center demand addresses the broader electricity-supply challenge, not just standby equipment at one site.
In Microsoft’s described data-center architecture, the UPS supplies power when utility service is interrupted, giving generators time to take over. That transition role is different from providing power for an extended outage. A battery system can be sized for more than brief ride-through, but whether it can cover a target outage depends on its power rating, usable stored energy, load and recharge plan; a UPS is not automatically a long-duration generator replacement. Microsoft’s architecture description explains the UPS-to-generator sequence.
How the main alternatives differ
| Approach | Primary role | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|
| UPS and battery energy storage | Immediate ride-through; potentially longer support depending on system design | Duration is limited by usable stored energy, load and recharge capability. |
| Hydrogen PEM fuel cells | Generate electricity from stored or delivered hydrogen | Fuel supply, storage, system scale, safety, cost and regulatory conditions. |
| Fuel-cell microgrid | Coordinate on-site generation and storage across a facility or campus | Requires integrated controls, protection, grid arrangements and site infrastructure. |
| Grid-scale clean generation, efficiency and upgrades | Increase broader electricity supply or reduce demand pressure | These measures are not necessarily dedicated standby power at the data-center boundary. |
UPS and battery energy storage
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) can support resilience and other site energy uses, but their backup capability is a sizing and operating question rather than a fixed runtime. Designers need to account for critical load, power output, usable state of charge and how the batteries will be recharged. Schneider Electric’s BESS white paper for data centers, dated November 13, 2024, version 1.1, discusses these systems in the data-center context. The cited material does not establish battery-only systems as a universal substitute for generation during extended outages.

Hydrogen PEM fuel cells
Proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuel cells generate electricity from hydrogen. Microsoft reported a 250 kW proof-of-concept system that powered a row of data-center servers for 48 consecutive hours. That is evidence of a specific demonstration, not proof of broad commercial deployment or universal economics. Microsoft infrastructure engineer Mark Monroe described the tested automotive fuel cell as able to start quickly and reach full load within seconds; that is his description of the technology, not an independent comparative test. Microsoft’s account of its hydrogen fuel-cell work also discussed up to 100,000 kilograms of hydrogen for a hypothetical 48-hour data-center backup scenario. That estimate is specific to the scenario in the report, not a general sizing rule.
Equinix announced a 12-week pilot at its DB3 Dublin data center on June 19, 2026. The announcement described two hydrogen-powered units providing up to 0.5 MW of continuous power to cooling systems. It framed the pilot as a practical test, not evidence that hydrogen has become a standard replacement for diesel across data centers. Equinix’s stated “zero direct onsite emissions” refers to operation at the point of use and the announced hydrogen supply; it does not establish lifecycle emissions for every hydrogen production and delivery pathway. The announcement quotes Equinix Ireland managing director Peter Lantry describing the work with ESB as a live-environment test. Equinix’s pilot announcement contains those details.

Fuel cells within a microgrid
A microgrid is an integrated site-level system, not a single generator. It can combine generation and storage with controls and protection that coordinate how the facility uses on-site power and interacts with the grid. Its usefulness for backup depends on the full design, including the power sources, transition behavior and arrangements for fuel and grid connection.
Oracle announced on April 27, 2026, that its planned Project Jupiter in New Mexico would use Bloom Energy fuel cells in a microgrid, with a maximum announced installed capacity of 2.45 GW. Oracle projected that the design would reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by approximately 92% compared with the gas turbines previously planned for the project. These are company-announced project specifications and expected impacts, not measured results from completed operation. Oracle also described water-efficiency benefits as expectations for the project. Oracle’s announcement provides the project context.

Grid-side clean power and efficiency
Solar, land-based wind, battery storage, efficiency, grid upgrades and emerging resources such as next-generation geothermal and nuclear can contribute to meeting growing data-center electricity demand. They should not automatically be treated as a facility’s standby system: generation available to the wider grid is not necessarily dedicated, islandable power at the data center during an outage. DOE says solar, land-based wind, battery storage and energy efficiency are among the most rapidly scalable and cost-competitive ways to meet increased demand. Its recommendations are about system-level supply and demand, not a guarantee of backup availability at an individual site. DOE’s resource overview sets out that broader perspective.

- Critical load and outage duration: Which systems must remain online, and for how long?
- Response and transfer behavior: What supplies power during the transition from the grid, and how quickly must the backup source reach the required load?
- Energy or fuel logistics: How much battery energy or fuel is needed, where it is stored, how it is replenished and what happens if deliveries are disrupted?
- Resilience and maintenance: What components require regular service, and how will the system perform when equipment is unavailable?
- Site and permitting constraints: Is there space for storage and generation, and can the proposed equipment meet local safety and regulatory requirements?
- Emissions, water and grid interaction: What impacts occur at the site, and how does the system operate alongside utility service?
- Lifecycle cost: Include equipment, infrastructure, fuel or charging, maintenance and replacement over the system’s life.
There is no comparable independent lifecycle-cost evidence in the cited material that establishes a universally cheapest or most reliable choice among diesel, BESS, fuel cells and microgrids. Efficiency metrics also answer a different question: Equinix cited a 1.54 global industry-average power usage effectiveness (PUE) from Uptime Intelligence’s 2025 Global Data Center Survey, with 1 as the theoretical best score. PUE describes energy efficiency, not backup reliability.
