For a small TypeScript project, the built-in fetch API is a strong default if you are comfortable checking HTTP status codes and handling response bodies explicitly. Axios is useful when its default HTTP-error rejection, interceptors, shared instances, or other request features solve a real need. Neither choice validates API data at runtime, and Fetch can also support shared project-wide behavior through a wrapper.

How Fetch and Axios handle errors

Fetch: HTTP errors do not reject the promise

A Fetch promise normally resolves once response headers arrive, even when the server returns an HTTP error such as 404. Check response.ok or response.status before treating the operation as successful. MDN documents this behavior and status-check pattern in its Fetch guide.

async function getJson<T>(url: string): Promise<T> {
  const response = await fetch(url);
  if (!response.ok) {
    throw new Error(`HTTP ${response.status}`);
  }
  return (await response.json()) as T;
}

This compact helper treats non-2xx responses as errors, but its error contains only a status message. A production wrapper may instead attach the status and parsed server error details, or return a discriminated result. It should also decide how to handle empty bodies and non-JSON responses rather than assuming every successful response can be parsed with json().

Fetch can also reject for network or request failures. Parsing the body is a separate asynchronous operation, so response.json() can fail independently—for example, if the body is malformed or cannot be consumed. A single catch may therefore represent different failure stages; preserve enough context to distinguish them when the application needs different recovery or messaging.

Axios: rejection depends on status policy

Axios responses expose data, status, statusText, headers, config, and request. Its documentation notes that statusText may be blank or unsupported with HTTP/2, so use the numeric status for reliable status-based logic. See the Axios response schema.

Axios’s error-handling guide separates three cases: a server response arrived with a status treated as unsuccessful; a request was sent but no response arrived; or an error occurred while setting up the request. Those distinctions matter: not every Axios error is an HTTP error. Axios’s validateStatus option controls which status codes resolve and which reject, so any shared wrapper, interceptor, or test should use the same policy. See Axios error handling.

TypeScript types do not verify server data

Both clients let you describe the response shape in TypeScript, but a type annotation does not inspect the bytes returned by a server. In the Fetch example, as T is a compile-time assertion only. Axios likewise supports a generic such as axios.get<User>(url) and exposes the parsed payload as response.data; that generic does not prove the server actually returned a User.

const response = await axios.get<User>(url);
const user = response.data;

When malformed or changed API data must be handled safely, parse it with a runtime schema validator before relying on the shape. Axios documents built-in TypeScript definitions in its TypeScript guide.

Feature and maintenance tradeoffs

Concern Fetch Axios
HTTP status handling Check ok or status yourself; HTTP error statuses do not ordinarily reject the promise. MDN Statuses outside the accepted range reject by default; validateStatus changes that policy. Axios
Shared configuration and response behavior Build and maintain a wrapper to standardize configuration, errors, or logging. Instances can hold shared configuration, and interceptors can centralize request or response behavior. Instances; interceptors
Cancellation Pass an AbortSignal from an AbortController; calling abort() cancels the request. Cancellation can also affect body reading after headers arrive. MDN Cancellation is among Axios’s documented request features. Check the installed package version for the exact API and runtime behavior. Axios cancellation
Transforms and other client features Use the web API and project-owned helpers for the behavior the application needs. Axios documents transformations and other request/response features. Axios documentation
Platform considerations The Fetch API is documented for Window and Worker contexts; actual availability depends on the target runtime and TypeScript library settings. MDN Axios documents browser and Node.js support; verify required options against the version and runtime you deploy. Axios documentation
Dependency and conventions No Axios dependency is needed, but a wrapper and its conventions are yours to maintain. Adds a dependency and its conventions; instances and interceptors may reduce repeated application code.

Centralizing behavior without hiding it

An Axios instance can centralize a base URL and shared configuration, while interceptors can implement shared response handling. These are useful when multiple parts of an application need the same policy. They can also make behavior harder to trace if they transform or swallow errors. Document what callers of the shared client should expect to receive and throw.

A Fetch wrapper can provide a similar application-level contract, including consistent status checks, parsing, and logging. That approach avoids adopting Axios solely to centralize behavior, but the project must implement and maintain the wrapper itself.

Which client should you choose?

Choose Fetch when

  • The application has straightforward requests and the team is comfortable handling status checks and parsing explicitly.
  • A small wrapper can cover the shared behavior the project actually needs.
  • You want to use the web platform API without adding a client dependency.

Choose Axios when

  • Its status-based rejection model better fits the application’s error-handling conventions, with any needed validateStatus policy made explicit.
  • Instances, interceptors, or documented client features reduce repeated code across a larger application.
  • The browser or Node.js support and specific options required by the project are available in the version you install.

Choose based on implementation work and the error contract your application needs—not on an assumed speed or reliability advantage. The documentation cited here does not establish a controlled performance comparison between Fetch and Axios.
