A matte screen can look grainy because its anti-glare finish scatters light—not only reflections from the room, but sometimes light coming from the display itself. You can clean away dust and smudges, but cleaning will not remove grain caused by an intact coating. If the texture remains distracting, compare screens with different finishes rather than trying to peel or scrape the surface.
Why a matte screen can look grainy
An anti-glare surface diffuses incoming light so reflections appear less like sharp mirror images. That texture can also scatter light traveling from the screen to your eyes, making bright areas or fine details appear hazy, sparkly, or grainy. RTINGS explains the trade-off between matte and glossy finishes; display-materials company TES describes sparkle as a possible effect when an anti-glare treatment is inhomogeneous and interacts with the display’s RGB pixel light (TES). A Society for Information Display technical article also discusses sparkle as a possible side effect of anti-glare layers and the balance between glare reduction, light transmission, and image clarity (Information Display, 2012).
This does not mean every grainy-looking screen has a defective coating. The appearance varies between displays; “matte” alone does not specify how strongly a surface diffuses light. For example, TCL says its Q8 and U8 monitor models use matte screens with 25% haze to reduce glare from direct ambient light. That figure applies to those named models, not to matte screens generally (TCL support).
How to tell whether it is dirt or the finish
Dust, fingerprints, and smudges sit on the surface and may be removable. Grain or sparkle that remains across clean areas—especially when viewing bright, uniform content—may come from the screen’s optical finish. This is a practical distinction, not a test that proves a coating is defective.

If you clean the display, follow the instructions for its exact make and model. ASUS advises against alcohol- or ammonia-based cleaners because they can damage coatings (ASUS cleaning guidance). A clean microfiber cloth may help remove surface dust if the manufacturer’s directions allow it, but it cannot change the texture of an intact anti-glare layer.
What you can—and should not—do
Clean only to remove surface contamination
Use the display maker’s approved cleaning method, without pressing hard or applying an unapproved liquid. If the grain remains after dust and smudges are gone, further cleaning is unlikely to help: the cause may be the finish rather than something sitting on it.

Do not peel or abrade the coating
Do not scratch, scrape, peel, or tear off a layer that looks like film. ASUS identifies the polarizer and anti-reflective or anti-glare layers as important parts of the display and warns that forcibly removing or damaging them can cause abnormal image behavior and affect warranty coverage (ASUS care guidance). Its instruction is explicit: “Do not attempt to scratch, peel, or tear off this dark film from the screen surface using fingernails, blades, or any tools.”
Consider another finish if the texture bothers you
If the grain is intrinsic and you find it distracting, the practical remedy is to compare displays with different finishes. Matte surfaces reduce mirror-like reflections and may suit bright rooms; glossy surfaces tend to look clearer but show direct reflections. Which trade-off works better depends on your room and preference (RTINGS’ matte-versus-glossy overview).

How to compare screens before choosing
Compare actual displays in lighting like the room where you normally use your screen. Look at both reflections and image texture instead of relying on the “matte” label alone.

- Direct reflections: Notice whether windows or lights appear as sharp reflections or are diffused.
- Fine detail and bright areas: Check whether text, pale backgrounds, or other fine content looks crisp or has a hazy, sparkling texture.
- Your usual ambient light: A finish that helps in a bright room may feel different in a dim room.
- Exact model specifications: Check whether the manufacturer lists a coating or haze specification for that particular display. One model’s figure does not describe every matte screen.
