A passive cooler cannot simply be placed in any small case: the case must dissipate heat through its surfaces and allow room air to circulate. For long, demanding workloads, a semi-passive design that starts a fan only when needed may be a better fit.
1. Decide what the PC will do
Start with the workload, because a machine used for browsing, office applications and media playback has a different thermal demand from one that regularly renders video, encodes media or performs sustained compute.
Noctua says passive cooling works best with mixed, non-continuous workloads that leave time for the heatsink to cool, and is less suitable for prolonged full-CPU loads such as rendering or video encoding. That is manufacturer guidance, not a performance guarantee for every build. Do not assume a particular passive configuration will hold a specific speed or temperature without testing it under your own workload.
2. Choose fully fanless or semi-passive cooling
- Fully fanless: No cooling fans operate. This avoids fan noise, but places more responsibility on the case and heatsink to shed heat through natural convection.
- Semi-passive: A fan can remain off during light use and start when heat rises. Noctua says an optional low-speed fan can substantially improve the NH-P1’s cooling headroom, making this an option when workload spikes are likely.
Silence at idle is not enough to establish suitability. Consider how often the computer will be under sustained load and whether occasional fan operation is acceptable.

3. Select the enclosure and motherboard together
In a passive build, the enclosure is part of the cooling system, not just a shell. Its surfaces must transfer heat to room air, and the layout must fit the board and components without obstructing the intended airflow by natural convection. A conventional case does not become a suitable fanless enclosure just because its fans are removed.
Before buying, check the exact case revision and motherboard combination. Akasa advises verifying motherboard socket compatibility, CPU support and cooler-height clearance. Also confirm physical room for the CPU cooler, memory modules, storage and their connectors.

- What's in Box: 1 x Mini PC, 1 x Power Supply, 1 x Power Cable, 1 x HD Cable, 2 x Antennas, 2 x Sata wires, Screws
Akasa recommends its Euler CTX and Euler CMX cases for low-power CPUs at or below 35W TDP. Treat that as Akasa’s product-selection guidance for those cases, not as a universal limit for all passive PC designs. Confirm the specific case’s current support information before ordering.
4. Match the processor and check motherboard heat
Do not use the CPU’s TDP as the sole compatibility test. Actual thermal behavior depends on the processor, workload, enclosure convection, room temperature and other components. A combination that appears suitable on paper may not handle a sustained workload in a warm room.

With no CPU-cooler fan moving air across the board, voltage-regulator modules (VRMs) can become a limiting factor. Noctua recommends choosing a motherboard with capable VRM design and heatsinking. Check the board’s layout as well as its socket and case compatibility.
5. Confirm the CPU cooler and clearances
The Noctua NH-P1 is a purpose-designed passive CPU cooler. Noctua specifies six heatpipes and lists support for Intel LGA1851, LGA1700, LGA1200 and LGA115x, plus AMD AM4 and AM5. Those socket listings do not mean it fits every motherboard or case using those sockets: verify current support, cooler clearance and memory compatibility against the exact parts. Noctua designed the cooler for use in a case with good natural convection and also supports an optional fan for semi-passive operation.

6. Assemble, then validate under real conditions
- Check the parts as a set. Verify the CPU socket, case support and clearances, cooler fit, memory and storage fit, and motherboard VRM heatsinking before assembly.
- Install components according to their manuals. Follow the motherboard and case instructions for mounting, power connections and storage installation; do not force a component that conflicts with a heatsink or enclosure.
- Run the computer in its intended location. Test the applications and workloads you expect to use, in the room conditions where the PC will operate. Observe temperatures and performance during both ordinary use and the longest demanding task you expect.
- Reconsider the cooling architecture if needed. If sustained work causes unacceptable heat or performance behavior, reduce the workload, choose a better-matched case or components, or use a semi-passive design.
Expect the chassis to become noticeably warm under stress, as Noctua notes for passive systems. Warmth alone is not a compatibility verdict; use observed temperatures and performance alongside the component makers’ limits. Generic TDP labels cannot prove that a particular combination will work.
