Regular air-dry polish is the simplest place to start: you do not need a lamp, and a guide sticker or fine brush can make the smile line easier to shape.
What you need for a French manicure
Gather these basics before you begin:
- Nail polish remover or a cleanser suitable for your existing polish, plus cotton or a small cleanup brush
- A nail file
- Base coat
- White nail polish for the tips
- Sheer pink or nude polish
- Clear top coat
- Optional: French-tip guide stickers or a fine nail-art brush
ORLY’s at-home tutorial uses a sticker guide, white polish, a nude or pink layer, top coat, and a brush with acetone for cleanup. OPI’s tutorial shows a similar look with a gel system, but its lamp and prep products are specific to that system—not requirements for a regular-polish manicure. Remove old polish and shape your nails
Start with clean, dry nails. File the free edge into your preferred shape, keeping the edges even. Avoid cutting your cuticles: the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) explains that cuticles help protect nails and surrounding skin from infection. Apply base coat
Brush on a thin layer of base coat and let it dry as directed on the bottle. Thin coats are easier to manage than a thick layer.

Paint the white smile line
Paint a narrow white arc across each free edge. If painting the curve freehand feels difficult, place French-tip guide stickers along the nails to create a boundary. ORLY’s tutorial uses a sticker and applies two coats of white; follow the drying directions for your own polish before removing the guide. Alternatively, use a fine detail brush to draw the curve without a sticker. Neither tool is essential.

Add the sheer pink or nude layer
Once the white polish is dry, apply a thin coat of sheer pink or nude polish over the nail. A light touch helps preserve the tip’s shape.

Seal with top coat and tidy edges
Apply clear top coat and allow the layers to air-dry according to the product directions before using your hands. For small slips, use a fine brush or cotton swab with an appropriate remover; ORLY’s tutorial demonstrates a brush with acetone for cleanup. Drying time and wear vary with the products and application, so there is no single reliable time or wear guarantee for every manicure.
How to make the French tip line look even
- Keep the arc narrow. A slim white edge is easier to repeat across all nails than a wide curve.
- Choose one aid. Use stickers for a physical boundary, or a detail brush if you prefer to shape the curve yourself. OPI recommends a detail brush for the smile line in its French-tip tutorial.
- Work one nail at a time. Match the curve and width from nail to nail rather than trying to paint every tip in one uninterrupted pass.
- Clean small errors before sealing. A small brush or swab with suitable remover can refine the edge; let the polish settle and dry before applying top coat.
Should you use regular polish or gel?
Both can create the French look, but gel adds equipment and health considerations. Regular polish dries in air and is the more straightforward option for a first at-home attempt. Gel polish must be cured with a compatible lamp, and curing and removal require following the product system’s directions.

OPI’s gel tutorial uses its GELement LED lamp and specifies 30-second curing intervals for each step, curing four fingers and then the thumb. That timing applies to the tutorial’s system, not to gel products generally. Use the curing time and lamp specified by the polish manufacturer rather than transferring OPI’s instructions to another brand.
The AAD says gel manicures can cause brittleness, peeling, and cracking; repeated use can also increase the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging on the hands. It advises considering traditional polish, applying broad-spectrum water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen or wearing opaque fingertip-less gloves before gel curing, avoiding picking off gel polish, and limiting acetone contact during removal. Consult a board-certified dermatologist about unusual nail changes or persistent nail problems. Its gel manicure guidance has further detail.

Common beginner mistakes to avoid
- Trimming the cuticles aggressively: leave this protective tissue intact rather than cutting it.
- Applying thick coats: thin layers are easier to control and should be allowed to dry as the product label directs.
- Removing stickers while polish is wet: wait until the white layer has dried sufficiently for the guide to lift cleanly, following the polish directions.
- Using another brand’s gel timing: curing requirements are system-specific; do not assume a lamp or timing is interchangeable.
- Picking or peeling polish off: especially with gel, removal should follow product instructions rather than force.
