Your purchased books will appear in the account’s library for download, while reading position, notes, and highlights can sync to the new device when syncing is enabled. You usually do not need to copy purchased books directly from the old Kindle.
Transfer books and reading progress to your new Kindle
- Connect and register the Kindle. Connect the new e-reader to Wi-Fi and register it with the Amazon account used to purchase the books. Amazon’s manual book-delivery instructions require signing in to the purchasing account and choosing a device registered to it.
- Run a sync. From the home screen, open Quick Actions or the menu and select Sync or Sync and Check for Items. Labels can vary by Kindle model and software. Amazon says syncing downloads pending books and backs up the furthest page read; see its Kindle sync instructions.
- Find and download your books. Open Library and switch to All to view titles associated with the account, including books not currently stored on the device. Select a title to download it for offline reading.
- Check your reading progress. Open the book on the new Kindle and check whether it has returned to the page you last read. Notes and highlights can sync as well. Amazon Kindle Help says sync saves reading position, notes, and highlights to Amazon’s servers and makes saved data available across Kindle apps and devices linked to the account; an internet connection is required. See Amazon’s sync settings guidance.
What transfers, and what you may need to do separately
| Item | How it works on the new Kindle |
|---|---|
| Purchased Kindle books | Available through the Amazon account that owns them. Sync to refresh the library, then download titles you want stored on the device. |
| Reading position, notes, and highlights | Sync through the account when the devices are linked to the same account, the Kindle is online, and sync is enabled. |
| Collections | Collections and book downloads are separate. Collections do not necessarily download to other devices automatically; download their items on the new Kindle if needed. |
| Personal documents or sideloaded files | Amazon supports Send to Kindle and USB transfer for documents, but these instructions do not establish that progress for every third-party or locally copied file will migrate. |
If a book is missing from the library
- In Library, select All and clear any filters that might hide the title.
- Confirm the Kindle is registered to the account that purchased the book, then connect to Wi-Fi and sync again.
- Check the title in Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices delivery instructions. If it appears there, choose the book, select Deliver or Remove from Device, choose the new Kindle, and make the change. Sync the Kindle afterward.
- If the title is not listed in the account’s content, check the digital order and payment status. Amazon’s Kindle library troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the order when a book is absent from Manage Your Content and Devices.
Download a collection to the new Kindle
Collections created on a registered Kindle or on Amazon’s website do not automatically download to every other device. On the new Kindle, open Library, choose Collections under Sort By, then open the collection menu and choose the option to download all items. Amazon documents this in its collection download instructions.
If your reading progress or annotations do not appear
- Check that the old and new Kindle are registered to the same Amazon account and that both can connect to the internet.
- Run Sync on the new Kindle. Sync is enabled by default according to Amazon’s reviewed help page, but it can be turned off in device or account settings.
- If sync had been disabled while you made notes, highlights, or bookmarks, be cautious when turning it back on: Amazon warns that data made while sync was off may be lost when the setting is re-enabled.
Amazon’s documented delivery steps use the purchasing account. They do not establish that purchases can simply be merged into a different Amazon account. For personal documents, USB copying may move a file, but it does not by itself transfer Amazon cloud reading position; behavior for third-party or sideloaded files is not established here. The Amazon help pages cited above did not show publication dates and were accessed on October 4, 2026, so menu wording may differ by device or software version.
