Set the TV’s overall light output to suit the room, and keep motion smoothing low or off unless you prefer smoother motion or need a small adjustment for judder. There is no single set of numeric settings that works for every TCL model: available controls depend on the TV, its software, picture mode, input, and content.
Start with a picture mode that suits what you watch
Picture mode is the most useful first change because it adjusts a group of image characteristics at once. For films and scripted programs, try Movie or FILMMAKER MODE, when available. TCL describes Movie as a more accurate starting point for movies, while FILMMAKER MODE is intended to present supported movies and shows closer to the creator’s intended picture style. TCL’s Google TV settings guide describes FILMMAKER MODE in those terms.
Vivid is designed to make the image look more enhanced, and may suit viewers who want a punchier presentation. Sports may be preferable for sports if its brighter, more motion-forward appearance works for you. Names and availability vary, so use the closest relevant option shown on your TV rather than expecting every model to offer the same list.
Set overall light output for the room
Adjust the TV’s overall screen light for your viewing environment: a bright room may need more output, while a dark room often calls for less. Revisit it when the room lighting changes. TCL’s Roku TV settings guidance distinguishes the overall brightness control from picture controls that affect black or white levels.

On some menus, Backlight or a similar control changes how much light the screen produces, while Brightness changes the black level and Contrast affects white levels. Labels differ by model and platform; check your manual before changing a control whose effect is unclear. Avoid treating these as interchangeable sliders.
Leave black level, contrast, and color temperature near their starting points
Brightness (black level) and Contrast (white level) affect shadow and highlight detail. If dark areas look crushed or bright areas lose visible detail, make a small adjustment while viewing familiar content. TCL documents these controls, but does not provide one universal numeric recipe for all sets. Use the picture you can actually see—not an arbitrary number copied from settings for another model—as your guide.
Color temperature controls whether the image looks warmer or cooler. A warmer option is a reasonable cinema-oriented starting point if it is available, but labels and preference vary. Give it a brief comparison with your chosen picture mode before deciding whether you prefer it.

Keep sharpness and cleanup processing restrained
Sharpness affects edge definition, while noise reduction attempts to clean up visible noise. For clean HD or 4K material, leave these enhancements restrained; added edge processing can make the image look less natural. Consider noise reduction only when a low-quality source visibly has distracting noise. TCL describes these controls in its Google TV settings guide.
Choose motion processing based on your preference
For films, start with motion smoothing or judder reduction low or off to retain a more cinema-style cadence. If camera pans look uneven, try a small increase. You can also choose more smoothing if you simply prefer the result, particularly for content where fluid motion matters more than a film-like appearance. Motion controls and their effects differ among models, and processing may create a smoother-than-cinematic look.
TCL notes that motion clarity and picture quality depend on the content, how it is delivered, and how the TV processes it. A motion issue may therefore reflect the source as well as the TV setting; compare the same scene before and after a small change. See TCL’s motion and picture-quality guidance.

Compare automatic enhancements instead of assuming they help
Controls such as dynamic contrast, dynamic color, automatic HDR conversion, and adaptive brightness can alter the image automatically. They may be useful for particular content or rooms, but can also make the picture less consistent. Compare a control on and off using the same scene, then keep the setting that looks better to you. TCL lists these among its image-processing options; availability varies by TV.

Picture changes may not carry across every source or picture mode. TCL says advanced settings on Roku TVs are typically saved by input and mode. Its Google TV video settings guide describes an Apply All Picture Settings option on some models. After changing settings, check the source you watch—such as a streaming app, game console, or cable box—and confirm whether the picture mode has the changes you expect.

Menu paths and control names are not identical across TCL Roku TV and Google TV sets. Consult the manual for your exact model before following a path or looking for a specific option. TCL explicitly cautions that available settings can vary by content, input, picture mode, TV model, and software. See its Google TV video settings guide for setting groups and applying settings.

Keep framing intact and leave expert calibration optional
Use an aspect-ratio or picture-size option that preserves the source’s intended framing. Overscan enlarges the image and can cut off its edges; check that captions and picture details near the edges remain visible. TCL’s Google TV video settings guidance explains overscan and picture sizing.
White balance and color space are expert calibration controls, not necessary steps for ordinary setup. TCL describes measurement equipment and software as tools that may be used for expert calibration; do not enter unmeasured values copied from another TV.
