Usually, no. On iPhones whose Main camera aperture is automatic, the Portrait-mode “Aperture” slider changes the software-rendered background blur, not the lens opening. Apple documents a model-specific exception: iPhone 18 Pro models support manual aperture settings in certain camera modes. The effect therefore depends on the iPhone, app and mode you’re using.
What the iPhone Aperture slider changes
In Portrait mode, Apple calls the blur adjustment Depth Control. Moving its slider changes how much blur the image renders behind the subject. You can adjust it while composing a supported shot in Camera or later in Photos. The control’s “Aperture” wording does not, by itself, mean the lens iris moved.
That distinction matters because aperture has two related but different meanings here. A physical aperture is an opening in the camera lens: changing it affects the amount of light entering the camera and contributes to optical depth of field, or how much of a scene appears in focus. The Portrait slider instead adjusts the depth effect Apple describes as background blur. See Apple’s guide to taking portraits with iPhone.
How the answer varies by iPhone and camera mode

Adjust blur while taking a supported photo
- Open Camera and choose Portrait mode, or use a supported Photo mode situation where the Depth control appears.
- Open the camera controls and move the Depth Control slider to change the amount of background blur. Labels and availability vary by model and mode; Apple’s Portrait camera instructions cover the supported controls.
In supported Photo mode situations, the camera can capture depth information so you can apply the Portrait effect afterward. That does not mean every Photo mode image, or every iPhone, captures this information.

Adjust blur or focus after capture
- Open Photos and select an eligible Portrait photo.
- Choose Edit, then move the Depth Control slider to change the blur effect.
- Change the focus point if available. Apple documents post-capture focus-point editing for iPhone 13 or later. See Edit Portrait mode photos on iPhone for the supported editing controls.
What to expect in Cinematic mode
Cinematic mode applies a depth-of-field effect and can track or transition focus between subjects. On supported models, you can adjust the Aperture value before recording and edit focus during or after recording. Apple’s Cinematic mode instructions describe those controls. As with Portrait, an Aperture setting in this mode should not be taken as evidence that the physical lens opening changes unless Apple documents manual aperture for that exact model, app and mode.

How to tell which kind of change you’re making
- Look at the model and mode: a Portrait Depth Control slider adjusts the Portrait effect; Apple documents manual aperture controls for iPhone 18 Pro models in specified modes.
- Check when the adjustment is available: Portrait blur can be adjusted while framing a supported image or after capture in Photos. Manual controls depend on the supported model, mode and, in Final Cut Camera, software version.
- Separate blur from focus: changing the strength of the blur effect is not the same as selecting which subject is in focus.
- Don’t infer optical image quality from the control alone: Apple’s cited guidance documents what the controls do, but does not establish a quality ranking between the software effect and manual aperture workflows.
