Choose a weight-management clinic by how it assesses your health, explains options and risks, coordinates care, and follows up—not by promises of a particular amount of weight loss. Check clinicians’ qualifications and experience, ask who will manage your care, and get a clear explanation of costs. If you are considering surgery, also verify the center’s current accreditation and ask how it supports patients after the procedure.
Start with a comprehensive assessment
A responsible clinic should learn about your overall health and previous treatment before recommending a plan. The American Diabetes Association’s 2026 Standards of Care recommend comprehensive assessment and shared planning. Read the 2026 standards.
Ask what the initial assessment covers and how its findings will shape your options. You should be able to discuss your health, prior treatment, potential benefits and risks, and what matters to you. A recommendation should be explained as part of a conversation, not presented as a guaranteed result.
Check qualifications and relevant experience
Verify that the clinicians are licensed to practice where you live and have experience relevant to the care they offer. In the United States and Canada, the American Board of Obesity Medicine’s Diplomate certification indicates specialized knowledge and competency in obesity medicine for eligible physicians. It is a useful credential to check, but it does not replace confirming a clinician’s license, experience, and fit for your needs. Learn about ABOM certification.

Qualifications differ by country and profession. Confirm the relevant regulator and credentialing system in your location rather than assuming a US or Canadian credential applies elsewhere.
Find out who coordinates your care
Weight-management care may involve medical, nutrition, and behavioral support. Ask which professionals are available, whether they work together, and who is responsible for coordinating your plan. The ADA standards support comprehensive assessment and shared planning; the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases also describes the range of health professionals who may be involved in weight management. Ask how follow-up and safety monitoring work
Before you begin, ask who will follow your progress, how often you will be seen, and what monitoring is appropriate for the treatment being offered. Clarify how the clinic handles side effects, complications, or a plan that is not working for you. The details will depend on the care you choose, so ask the clinic to explain its process for your specific plan.
Compare options, risks, and costs
Ask the clinician to explain the options they consider appropriate, the risks and expected commitments of each, and why they recommend one over another. Request a written estimate of what you may pay and ask what is included. Costs and insurance coverage vary by location and plan; confirm coverage directly with your insurer or local payer rather than relying on a general estimate.

If you are considering bariatric surgery
Check the center’s current status in the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) directory, and ask the program to confirm its accreditation. The 2026 MBSAQIP standards took effect July 1, 2026. Accreditation indicates that a program meets defined standards; it is not a guarantee of an individual outcome. See the American College of Surgeons’ MBSAQIP information.
Ask about the surgeon’s experience with the procedure being discussed, how the team evaluates whether surgery is suitable for you, and what multidisciplinary support is available. Before deciding, establish who will provide postoperative nutrition support and follow-up, how long that follow-up continues, and whom to contact if a problem arises.
