Choose polarized sunglasses when reflected glare from water, roads, or other smooth surfaces is the problem. Choose non-polarized lenses if you want to dim bright light but need to keep some LCD screens easy to read or see icy patches clearly. Either way, check the UV-protection label separately: polarization and lens darkness do not establish UV protection.
What is the difference between polarized and non-polarized sunglasses?
A polarized lens has a filter that reduces reflected glare, especially horizontally reflected light from surfaces such as water and shiny cars. A non-polarized tinted lens reduces the amount of visible light reaching your eyes, but does not selectively filter that reflected glare. In short, polarization changes which reflected light gets through; tint changes how much visible light gets through.
Polarization is a comfort and visibility feature, not a measure of UV protection. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) explains that the filter reduces glare while allowing vertically oriented light through. A polarized label alone does not tell you whether a lens blocks ultraviolet radiation.
Which type should you choose for your activity?

How to check UV protection
UV protection is a separate lens property. Look for labeling that says “100% UV,” “UV400,” or that the lenses block both UVA and UVB. Do not assume a dark tint or polarization provides protection: darker lenses are not necessarily better at blocking UV. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises that claims about a sunglass lens should match its optical properties. For coverage beyond the front of the eye, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says wraparound sunglasses or side shields provide the best UV protection. See the CDC travel guidance on sun protection.
What to check before buying
- UV label: Confirm 100% UV, UV400, or protection against both UVA and UVB; do this whether or not the lenses are polarized.
- Glare needs: Choose polarization when reflected glare is a recurring problem, such as on water or bright roads.
- Displays and ice: Check screen readability and consider whether you need to identify icy patches in your usual conditions.
- Fit and coverage: A close-fitting or wraparound frame, or side shields, can provide more peripheral coverage.
- Driving and impact claims: FDA guidance for the United States treats nonprescription sunglasses as Class I medical devices and addresses driving-related labeling and impact resistance. It cautions against describing lenses as “shatterproof”; impact-resistance language does not mean a lens cannot break.
For health context, AAO spokesperson and ophthalmologist Michael Kutryb, MD, notes: “UV radiation, whether from natural sunlight or indoor artificial rays, can damage the eye’s surface tissues as well as the cornea and lens.” AAO guidance
