Choose a Mac AI assistant by checking what happens to each request—not by relying on a product-wide label such as “private” or “on-device.” Apple Intelligence can process some requests on your Mac and route others to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute; ChatGPT and Claude are cloud services, while Ollama can run models locally or use cloud-hosted models. Before sharing sensitive material, confirm the exact mode, what leaves your Mac, how long it may be retained, whether it may be used to improve models, and what access the app has to your files.
Start with the kind of privacy you need
Privacy can mean several different things. Decide which risk you are trying to reduce before comparing assistants:
- Keep prompt content on your Mac: Look for a genuinely local inference mode, and verify that the selected model is not cloud-hosted.
- Limit retention: Check whether prompts, attachments, screenshots, and chat history are stored, and for how long.
- Prevent model improvement use: Review the relevant account setting and its scope; turning it off is not the same as preventing all retention.
- Limit account linkage: An account-free integration may follow different data handling from a signed-in app.
- Control access to local content: Review macOS permissions for files, accessibility, automation, and storage. These permissions govern device access, not a provider’s retention or training practices.
No single setting answers all five questions. A prompt can stay out of model training but still be stored temporarily, or remain local while an app has broad access to files.
Compare the actual processing paths

These are provider policy descriptions, not independent audits of implementation. Apple’s June 2026 announcement describes its design position, not comparative proof that one assistant is more private than another: Apple Intelligence announcement.

Understand what Apple Intelligence does—and does not—keep local
“On-device” is a request-level distinction, not a guarantee that every Apple Intelligence feature runs entirely on your Mac. Apple says many tasks use on-device models, while some requests can be routed to Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s notice says the service processes only the data relevant to the request and does not retain it after responding. You can export a Mac report showing requests sent to Private Cloud Compute; use it to see the cloud path rather than assume every request stayed local.
Availability is conditional: supported hardware, language and region matter, and Apple notes limits for server models. Check Apple’s current feature details for your Mac and location before treating a feature or processing path as available.

Separate Apple’s ChatGPT extension from the ChatGPT app
Using ChatGPT through Apple without an account
Apple’s integration gives you a distinct account-free path. You choose whether to send the request and any content it includes. OpenAI says it does not receive your IP address, store those requests, or use them to train models when the integration is used without a ChatGPT account. The prompt or attachment you choose to send still goes to ChatGPT for processing, so review it before you confirm.
Connecting an account or using the standalone Mac app
Signing in means the account’s settings apply; do not assume the account-free terms carry over. For the standalone Mac app, OpenAI says uploads are stored in the cloud and the app follows web-app retention policies. OpenAI also says individual users’ content may be used to improve models by default until they opt out. Check Data Controls and whether an upload is necessary before sharing a document or screenshot.

What Temporary Chat changes
OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history and are not used to improve models, but they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Temporary Chat is therefore not a no-retention mode. OpenAI also says personalization in a Temporary Chat can still draw on existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins unless those are switched off for that chat.
Choose local inference only when the model really runs locally
Ollama offers a local-inference option, but the word “local” depends on the selected model and mode. Ollama’s policy distinguishes prompts and responses processed locally from cloud-hosted models, which handle content differently. Verify the selected model is local before entering sensitive information; using a local runner does not make cloud mode local.

Local processing also does not settle every privacy question. The interface you use may have its own data practices, and downloaded models or apps are not automatically safe merely because inference runs on your Mac. Consider model capability and setup alongside locality: a local option may involve different configuration and performance trade-offs than a hosted assistant.

An assistant may ask macOS for access to protected files, accessibility features, automation, or broader storage. macOS permission prompts can bound what an app accesses on the device, but they do not determine what a provider retains after content is sent to a service.

- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Review the relevant permission categories, such as Files and Folders, Accessibility, Automation, or Full Disk Access.
- Grant only the access needed for the feature you intend to use. If an assistant does not need broad file access for your task, do not grant it by default.
- Revisit permissions if you change apps or enable new integrations; an app’s access needs can differ from the provider’s cloud data policy.

Use a pre-session check for sensitive work
- Name the mode: Is this Apple on-device processing, Private Cloud Compute, account-free ChatGPT through Apple, a signed-in consumer chatbot, or local inference?
- Check the destination: Will the prompt or attachment leave the Mac? If using Ollama, confirm the model is local rather than cloud-hosted.
- Check retention and training separately: Look at the applicable provider and account settings; one does not answer the other.
- Minimize what you send: Remove names, account numbers, or unrelated pages when the task does not require them.
- Check permissions: Confirm that the app has only the Mac access you want it to have.
- Recheck current terms: Feature availability and policies can change. Apple identifies language, region, and server-model limits; chatbot terms and controls can also change.
Match the choice to your priority
- Want the strongest locality for prompt content? Prefer verified local inference with a local model, and check the interface’s permissions and data practices.
- Want Apple integration with a documented cloud boundary? Apple Intelligence combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute for some requests; inspect the request report and availability for your Mac.
- Want ChatGPT through Apple without linking an account? Use the account-free integration only after reviewing the selected content; OpenAI’s stated no-IP, no-storage, and no-training handling applies to that unauthenticated path.
- Want account history or personalization? Use the signed-in service with eyes open to its account controls, cloud handling, and retention exceptions. Configure the settings before a sensitive session rather than assuming one product’s settings govern another.
No independent comparative study in the cited official sources establishes a single most-private Mac assistant. The useful comparison is the actual data path and controls for the mode you intend to use, not a universal privacy ranking.
