Indoor chime and phone alerts control different things
A visitor pressing the doorbell can produce sound from a compatible indoor chime and a notification on a phone or tablet. These outputs have separate settings, so turning one off does not by itself turn off the other.

Google’s audio settings guide says, “The app can still send a notification to let you know that someone’s at the door.” That distinction explains why a phone may alert while the house remains quiet—or why the chime can ring even when a phone notification is disabled.
Mute the chime temporarily or leave it off
Use Quiet Time for a temporary quiet period
Quiet Time is intended as a temporary mute. When enabled, it keeps the indoor chime from ringing and suppresses visitor announcements on compatible speakers or displays. Phone notifications may still arrive. When Quiet Time ends, the doorbell resumes its current chime setting.

Turn off the indoor chime for an ongoing mute
To keep the home chime from ringing, change the indoor-chime control in the doorbell’s settings. In Google Home, the general path is doorbell tile > Settings > Doorbell controls. For supported legacy setups in the Nest app, use the Indoor chime On/Off control. Menu names can differ by model or app version; Google’s settings guide has Android and iOS directions.
This changes the chime output, not phone alerts. Leave or adjust the doorbell’s alert preferences separately if you want notifications to continue reaching your device.

What changes with your doorbell model and installation
Available chime options depend on the doorbell model and how it is installed. In particular, a wire-free battery installation cannot use the existing home doorbell chime. A battery Nest Doorbell installed with wires may use the home chime, while digital chimes are supported only with doorbells wired to the home’s doorbell system.

See Google’s battery doorbell installation guide and chime compatibility guidance for model-specific details. A digital chime uses an internal speaker rather than moving parts; its duration setting changes how long that chime plays, not whether a phone alert is delivered.

Troubleshoot the output that is missing
The indoor chime does not ring
- Confirm that the doorbell is installed in a way that supports the home chime; a wire-free battery installation cannot use it.
- Check that the indoor chime is enabled and Quiet Time is not active.
- For a wired installation, check power and wiring, including the required chime connector on the wired models identified in Google’s compatibility guidance.
- If you use a Google speaker or display for visitor announcements instead, check that the devices are online and that announcements are set up.
The phone does not receive an alert
- Review the doorbell’s alert preferences in Google Home or Nest. Google describes these as controls for activity notifications received on a phone or tablet; see its camera and doorbell alerts guide.
- Check that Google Home or Nest is allowed to send notifications in the app and in your phone or tablet’s operating-system settings. Google’s Google Home app notification guide covers the app-level controls.
- Confirm that the doorbell is powered and online. A disabled notification permission or an offline device can prevent alerts independently of the indoor-chime setting.
Start with the missing output: chime troubleshooting focuses on installation, chime controls and wiring; phone-alert troubleshooting focuses on alert preferences, notification permissions and connectivity.
