A Nest Doorbell connected to a compatible wired indoor chime can ring without a Nest speaker or display. A wire-free battery installation cannot use a digital chime; for an indoor audible announcement, Google describes a speaker or display as the typical option. Phone alerts are separate and do not require a speaker.
What do you mean by “ringtones”?
Nest Doorbell can produce different kinds of alerts: an indoor chime connected to doorbell wiring, a visitor announcement from a speaker or display, or a notification on a phone. These are not interchangeable. Whether you hear a sound inside the home depends on the doorbell’s wiring, chime type, and—in a wireless setup—whether a compatible speaker or display is available.
Which setup do you have?
| Setup | Indoor sound without a speaker or display? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Wired Nest Doorbell with a compatible wired chime | Yes | The doorbell must be connected to the home’s doorbell system. Compatibility and power requirements vary by model and region. Some wired models require the included chime connector; Google says omitting it can cause buzzing or unexpected chimes. Google’s compatibility guide covers model-specific requirements. |
| Nest Doorbell (battery), installed wire-free | Not through a digital chime | Google says digital chimes work only with Nest Doorbells wired to the home’s doorbell system. For an indoor audible alert in a wireless installation, Google describes a Google or compatible speaker or display as the typical chime route. Google’s audio-settings guidance explains the digital-chime limitation. |
| Nest Doorbell (battery) connected to existing wiring | It depends | The battery model can be wired to a doorbell system in some compatible installations, so do not assume its chime behavior from the product name alone. Check the exact model, wiring, and chime type in Google’s compatibility guide. |
| Phone notifications only | No indoor chime is implied | The Home or Nest app can notify phones with access when someone rings. Notifications must be enabled, and the phone and doorbell must be in the same Home. See Google’s visitor-announcement guidance. |
Wired chime versus digital chime
A compatible wired chime is the main way to hear a Nest Doorbell indoors without adding a speaker or display. Installation and power requirements differ across doorbell generations and regions, so confirm compatibility before relying on an existing chime. For models that require it, install the included chime connector as directed; the connector is not a universal fix for every model or wiring issue.
A digital chime uses an internal speaker rather than moving parts. Google says digital chimes work only with Nest Doorbells wired to the home’s doorbell system, which rules them out for a battery doorbell installed wire-free. Google also states that battery-only wireless chimes do not work with Nest Doorbells; do not assume an arbitrary wireless chime will pair with one.

Getting an announcement on a speaker or display
Google says visitor announcements are available on voice-assistant-enabled speakers or displays set up in the same Home as the doorbell. Do Not Disturb on that speaker or display can prevent the announcement. A speaker or display is an option for an indoor announcement, not a requirement for every wired-chime installation.
For a wire-free battery setup where an audible indoor announcement matters, a compatible speaker or display is the documented route. Check the device’s current compatibility rather than assuming that any speaker will work.

How to get phone alerts instead
- Open the Home or Nest app you use for the doorbell and enable doorbell notifications.
- Make sure the phone has access to the same Home as the doorbell.
- If you expect a speaker or display announcement as well, check that it is in that same Home and that Do Not Disturb is off.
Phone notifications can alert you without a speaker or display, but they are alerts on the phone—not an indoor doorbell chime. Google’s visitor-announcement guidance describes the same-Home and notification conditions.

- Identify the exact Nest Doorbell model and whether it is battery-powered, wired, or connected to existing wiring.
- Check whether the indoor chime is mechanical or digital and whether Google lists it as compatible for your model and region.
- For a wired model that requires a chime connector, confirm that the included connector is installed correctly.
- For a speaker or display announcement, confirm it is in the doorbell’s Home and that Do Not Disturb is off.
- For phone alerts, confirm notifications are enabled and the phone and doorbell are in the same Home.
