For schema changes SQLite cannot make with a supported ALTER TABLE operation, rebuild the table inside a transaction: create a replacement, copy and map the data, drop the original, rename the replacement, restore dependent objects, check foreign keys, and commit. Do not rename the original table out of the way first; that can rewrite references in triggers, views, and foreign-key definitions.

Decide whether you need a rebuild

SQLite directly supports renaming a table or column, adding a column, and dropping a column. Whether a direct operation works depends on the change and its restrictions. For example, DROP COLUMN fails if that column is involved in constraints, indexes, foreign keys, generated columns, triggers, or views. For other structural changes, use the rebuild procedure.

Change Typical approach What to consider
Rename a table or column Direct ALTER TABLE Check how the rename affects references in triggers, views, and foreign keys.
Add a column Direct ALTER TABLE ... ADD COLUMN when its restrictions fit Consider how existing rows satisfy the new column’s requirements.
Drop a column Direct ALTER TABLE ... DROP COLUMN only when dependencies permit Constraints, indexes, foreign keys, generated columns, triggers, or views involving the column can prevent the operation.
Change a column’s datatype or position, or change primary key, unique, check, foreign-key, or not-null constraints Rebuild the table Define how existing values map to the new schema and how invalid values should be handled.

SQLite’s ALTER TABLE documentation says: “The only schema altering commands directly supported by SQLite are the ‘rename table’, ‘rename column’, ‘add column’, ‘drop column’ commands shown above.”

Rebuild the table in a safe order

Replace X with the existing table name and new_X with a temporary name that does not already exist. Adapt the column mapping and saved object definitions to your schema.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Record foreign-key enforcement. Check whether enforcement is enabled on the connection. If it is, turn it off before starting the transaction; SQLite does not allow changing PRAGMA foreign_keys while a transaction is active.
  2. Start a transaction. Keep the table change and dependent-object changes together so they can be committed as one migration or rolled back if a step fails.
  3. Save dependent definitions. Inspect indexes and triggers with SELECT type, sql FROM sqlite_schema WHERE tbl_name='X'; Save the SQL needed to recreate them. Identify views that refer to the table as well; views may need to be dropped and recreated if their definitions are affected.
  4. Create the replacement table. Define new_X with the target schema.
  5. Copy and map the rows. Insert the old data into the replacement, explicitly mapping columns when they differ. For example: INSERT INTO new_X (id, name) SELECT id, name FROM X; Add deliberate expressions or defaults where values need conversion or new columns need population.
  6. Drop the original. Run DROP TABLE X; only after the copy succeeds. When foreign keys are enabled, dropping a table performs an implicit delete that may invoke foreign-key actions or constraints.
  7. Give the replacement its final name. Run ALTER TABLE new_X RENAME TO X;
  8. Restore dependent objects. Recreate the saved indexes and triggers. Drop and recreate views if the schema change affects them.
  9. Check foreign keys before committing. If enforcement was originally enabled, run PRAGMA foreign_key_check; and inspect the returned rows. Resolve any violations before proceeding.
  10. Commit and restore enforcement. Commit the transaction. If foreign-key enforcement was enabled originally, turn it back on after the transaction.

The official sequence is documented in SQLite’s ALTER TABLE documentation; foreign-key behavior for dropping a table is described in SQLite’s foreign-key documentation.

Map data deliberately and validate the result

A blind SELECT * is risky when the target schema differs. Name both the destination and source columns so the mapping is visible and stable. For a new column, decide what existing rows should contain; for a renamed or converted column, specify the source expression; for a new constraint, decide whether incompatible rows should cause the migration to fail or be transformed according to application rules.

  • Confirm the copied row count against the original, allowing for any intentional filtering or transformation.
  • Check application-specific invariants, such as required values or relationships that are not captured by foreign keys.
  • Run PRAGMA foreign_key_check; before commit when foreign keys were originally enabled, and investigate any reported violations.

Row counts and application-level checks are prudent validation steps; the generic rebuild procedure does not define how a particular application’s data should be transformed.

Why you should not rename the old table first

A tempting sequence is to rename X to a temporary name, create a new X, copy the data, and then drop the temporary table. Avoid it. SQLite warns that renaming the original first can change references to it in triggers, views, and foreign-key constraints. The safer sequence creates the replacement under a temporary name, drops the original only after copying, and then renames the replacement to the original name.

Rename behavior also depends on SQLite version. Trigger and view references began being rewritten during table renames in SQLite 3.25.0, released 2018-09-15. Foreign-key references began being rewritten regardless of the foreign_keys setting in SQLite 3.26.0, released 2018-12-01, unless PRAGMA legacy_alter_table=ON is used. The default for legacy_alter_table is OFF. See the ALTER TABLE documentation and legacy_alter_table pragma reference for details, and verify behavior against the SQLite runtime version your application uses.

Plan for the connection and application

The transaction keeps the schema change within one database transaction, but it does not remove every deployment concern. Application frameworks may manage transactions or migrations differently, and workload and connection behavior vary. Test the migration with the application’s SQLite version and a representative copy of the database. Ensure your migration code knows whether foreign-key enforcement was enabled and restores that state after the transaction.
