Fortnite does not use one universal key system across every mode. In Creative, keys and themed keycards are objective items that can unlock a creator-configured Conditional Button or satisfy an objective. A Creative Bank Vault is a separate device that can be configured to require Thermite. Battle Royale rules change by season; the available official information does not establish the current Chapter 7 Season 4 vault locations or key steps, so check the live map and the prompt shown in your game.
How keys work in Fortnite Creative
Epic describes Creative objective items as items that can grant access to areas or unlock requirements for in-game objectives. The inventory includes a generic Key and themed keycards associated with locations such as Catty Corner, the Fortilla, the Grotto, the Rig, the Shark, and the Authority. These are examples of Creative items, not a list of Battle Royale loot. Epic’s Objective Items documentation
Use a key with a Conditional Button
- Pick up and equip the key or keycard required by the island’s objective.
- Find the matching Conditional Button or item-required objective. In a creator-designed island, the item requirement is configured for that interaction; a key is not a universal master key.
- Interact with the button or objective and follow its on-screen instructions. The exact sequence can vary by island because creators choose how devices are configured.
Epic’s May 25, 2021 Creative v16.50 announcement says registered keycards can work with Conditional Button and Capture Area devices. When a keycard is registered as a Key Item, equipping it visually guides the player to the appropriate Conditional Button. This describes a documented Creative feature, not current Battle Royale behavior.
How a Creative vault can require Thermite
The Creative Bank Vault is a separate device from an objective-item button. Its “Require Thermite” option controls whether a player needs Thermite when interacting with the door to start opening the vault, according to Epic’s Bank Vault device documentation. A creator may enable or disable that requirement, so use the island’s on-screen instructions rather than assuming every vault follows the same rule.

What to do with keys in Battle Royale
Battle Royale key and vault mechanics can depend on the current season and update. Epic’s August 20, 2026 announcement identifies Chapter 7 Season 4 as “Override,” but it does not state which vaults accept keys, where keys appear, or how to open a vault: Chapter 7 Season 4: Override. Older seasonal instructions or Creative device rules should not be treated as confirmation of the live Battle Royale system.

- Check the current in-game map for marked locations and any key or vault indicators.
- Read the interaction prompt at the door or lock; it shows what the current match requires.
- If the prompt does not identify a requirement, do not assume a keycard, item count, or route based on a previous season.
