When an Xbox Free Play Days event or timed trial ends, you lose the temporary right to launch the game through that promotion. The end of the event does not, by itself, mean your save was deleted. If you later buy the game, whether it recognizes your trial save depends on that specific game’s implementation. Xbox says Gamerscore and achievements earned during an event can be kept when you purchase the game, but that is not a guarantee about every in-game save or unlock.
What ends when the trial ends?
The promotion controls access: once its event window or trial allowance is over, you can no longer rely on the promotional permission to play. Free Play Days selections and their terms change, so the cutoff may be an event end date or a time limit for a particular trial. Xbox has, for example, announced events with limited-hour trials; not every title uses the same duration, membership eligibility, or schedule. Check the specific event and the game’s current Xbox listing. Xbox Free Play Days distinguishes member offers from events available to all Xbox members.
Access and saved progress are separate questions. The promotion ending does not establish that the save file has been erased; it means the promotional access has ended. Whether you can resume that progress after regaining access is determined by the game’s save and trial setup.
Will your save transfer if you buy the game?
Possibly, but it is not guaranteed for every game. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit documentation describes trial implementations that can save state between sessions and carry progress from a trial into a purchased full game. This is a capability developers can implement, not a universal requirement. Also distinguish an in-game save from Gamerscore and achievements. Xbox says players who purchase a participating game can keep Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event. That statement does not promise that every title will retain every save, collectible, or other form of in-game progress.
How to keep playing or check your options
- Confirm what ended. Review the Free Play Days event and the game’s listing for its end date, trial limit, and eligibility. The lineup and terms can vary by title and region.
- Check the exact game and edition. Look for the Xbox edition you played and confirm its current regional availability and price. Discounts and eligible editions may differ by title and region; an old event announcement is not a reliable current price.
- Verify save compatibility. Consult the game’s support information or publisher guidance for whether its trial progress carries over to the purchased version. Microsoft’s documentation leaves that behavior to the game’s implementation.
- Choose an access route. Buying the game is one way to continue. You can also wait for another eligible promotion or subscription access, but a future event or catalog inclusion is not guaranteed.
A dated Free Play Days example
Xbox Wire’s October 1, 2026 announcement listed FARCRY 6, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Skull and Bones, and The Crew Motorfest for October 1 through October 4, 2026, describing the event as Free Play Days for all Xbox members. A separate Xbox Wire event announcement stated that players could purchase participating titles to continue playing while keeping Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event, and noted that title availability and discounts could vary by region.
