Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf your Nest Doorbell’s sound has not changed—or it has stopped ringing indoors—first identify which sound you mean. Google Home controls the wired indoor chime, the ring length of some digital chimes, Quiet Time, and visitor announcements on Google speakers or displays. These are separate settings and sound paths; Google’s support guidance does not confirm that every Nest Doorbell supports choosing a custom indoor ringtone.
Identify which Nest Doorbell sound you mean
“Ringtone” can refer to the sound made by a physical chime inside your home, how long a digital chime rings, or a visitor announcement from a Google speaker or display. Check the relevant path rather than expecting one ringtone control to change them all.
| Sound path | First checks | Next checks |
|---|---|---|
| Wired indoor chime | Indoor chime setting; Quiet Time; correct doorbell selected | Digital ring length, if applicable; chime type; power, connector, and wiring |
| Speaker or display announcement | Quiet Time; announcements enabled | Same Home assignment; device online; Do Not Disturb off |
Check the doorbell and chime settings in Google Home
-
Open Google Home and select the Nest Doorbell. Depending on the app layout, open the doorbell’s camera/player and go to Settings > Chime, or find it under All devices, then open the device controls or settings and choose Doorbell. Google documents both routes; labels and layout may vary. See Google’s Nest doorbell troubleshooting steps and doorbell audio settings.
-
Confirm that Ring indoor chime is on. If it is already on, do not assume the setting is the only issue: Quiet Time or a physical chime problem can still prevent the sound you expect.

Check whether Quiet Time is active and end it if you want the indoor chime or speaker announcements to sound. Quiet Time can mute those indoor sounds while the outside doorbell sound and app visitor notification continue. Google describes the behavior this way: “Your doorbell creates its usual doorbell sound outside, but the chime inside your home won’t ring.” Google Home Help: Change Nest camera & doorbell audio settings.
If you mean the indoor chime’s ring length
For a supported wired Nest Doorbell with a digital chime, check the digital chime duration setting in Google Home and adjust the ring length there. This setting concerns how long the digital chime sounds; it is not a general custom-tone selector. Battery-powered Nest Doorbells cannot use a digital chime. Google’s doorbell audio settings guidance describes the supported setting and limitation.

If the indoor chime setting looks right but there is still no sound
Determine whether the chime is mechanical or digital
A mechanical chime typically makes a classic “ding dong” sound with moving pistons. An electronic or digital chime plays a melody through a speaker. For a mechanical unit, a wire or connector can obstruct the moving parts, preventing the chime from sounding even when the Home setting is correct.
Check wiring and power safely
-
For a wired installation, check that the relevant power is on and that the connector or wires are seated correctly, but only inspect wiring if you can do so safely.

Google recommends getting professional help for complex wiring, including some chimes with more than three wires. Follow Google’s wiring and chime troubleshooting guidance.
If you mean a Google speaker or display announcement
A speaker or display announcement is an alternate visitor alert, not a way to change or repair the physical indoor chime. Check that announcements are enabled and that the doorbell and announcement device belong to the same Home. Confirm the speaker or display is online and that Do Not Disturb is off. Also check Quiet Time, which can mute visitor announcements. Google’s audio settings help and announcement setup guidance cover these settings.
