Rinse the lenses with lukewarm, clean water before wiping so grit cannot be dragged across the surface. If water alone does not remove oily grime, gently wash with a little mild, lotion-free soap, rinse thoroughly, then dry with a clean, soft microfiber or eyewear cloth. Follow your sunglasses maker’s care instructions if they differ, because lens materials and coatings vary.
Clean polarized sunglasses step by step
- Wash your hands and inspect the lenses. If you see dust, sand, or other loose debris, do not wipe it away dry. Costa warns that wiping residue can grind it into the lens and cause scratches. Costa’s care and cleaning instructions
- Rinse with lukewarm, clean water. Let the water carry away loose particles before touching the lenses. Avoid hot water.
- Wash away oily grime only if needed. For fingerprints, sunscreen, or similar residue that remains, use a little mild, lotion-free soap and gently clean the lenses and frame. Costa specifies lotion-free soap; Nike recommends a dab of mild dish soap. Nike’s sunglasses-cleaning guidance
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove all soap or cleaner rather than letting residue dry on the lenses. Costa and SWANS both include a thorough rinse in their cleaning guidance. SWANS maintenance guidance
- Dry with a clean, soft lens cloth. Use microfiber or a cloth made for eyewear. POC cautions that paper, towels, and clothing can scratch lenses. POC eyewear and lens care instructions
- Store them in a protective case. Keep the cleaning cloth clean as well; Nike advises replacing a cloth when it becomes dirty or linty, and Maui Jim recommends laundering its cloth frequently without fabric softener. Maui Jim’s cleaning guidance
What to avoid
- Dry-wiping dusty or sandy lenses: grit can scratch the surface when rubbed across it.
- Paper towels, tissues, and clothing: these are not substitutes for a clean lens cloth and can scratch lenses.
- Dirty or linty cloths: particles trapped in a cloth can rub against the lens. Clean or replace the cloth instead.
- Harsh cleaners and solvents: Costa warns that acetone, glass cleaner, rubbing alcohol, and vinegar may damage or degrade lenses, coatings, or frames. POC also advises against strong cleaning fluids, solvents, and alcohol.
- Long soaking and ultrasonic washing: SWANS warns that polarized film is delicate and advises against prolonged immersion or ultrasonic cleaning. Rinse and dry the sunglasses promptly.
When brand-specific instructions matter
General rinsing and gentle cleaning are not a guarantee that every lens or coating can be treated the same way. POC’s instructions say to “Clean sunglasses with a specific glasses cleaning cloth,” while SWANS includes cautions specific to polarized lenses. If the care guide for your exact model gives different directions, follow it rather than applying a universal rule.
Cleaning on the go
If the lenses are gritty, rinse them with clean water before wiping; do not use a shirt or a dry cloth to remove the grit. Once loose debris is gone, use a clean eyewear cloth to dry them. A travel cleaning kit is optional, but check that any cleaner is suitable for your lens material and coatings; the basic soap-and-water method is sufficient in the cited brand guidance.
