Both can use AMD hardware virtualization, but compatibility and performance depend on the exact Ryzen host, firmware, host operating system, hypervisor version, guest workload, VM settings, and whether Hyper-V or related features are active. Choose by checking your setup and the features you need—not by assuming one product wins on Ryzen.
Are VirtualBox and VMware Workstation compatible with AMD Ryzen?
Both products support AMD hardware virtualization in documented environments, but that does not guarantee every combination of Ryzen processor, host OS, firmware, and hypervisor release will work identically. For VMware Workstation, Broadcom lists AMD-V as a CPU requirement and says Workstation runs on 64-bit AMD hardware with 64-bit Windows or Linux hosts. Oracle’s VirtualBox 7.2 guide documents AMD-V-related virtualization controls, including nested virtualization and nested paging.
AMD-V is AMD’s hardware virtualization feature; on many AMD motherboards, the firmware setting that enables it is labeled SVM or SVM Mode. If a VM cannot start or a virtualization feature is unavailable, check the motherboard or system firmware and confirm SVM is enabled. Also check the current release’s host and guest OS support information rather than relying on an old installation guide or assuming that support for AMD processors covers every Ryzen model and OS build.
Is VirtualBox or VMware faster on Ryzen?
There is no reliable speed winner established by the official documentation reviewed. It does not provide a controlled, same-machine Ryzen benchmark comparing VirtualBox and Workstation with the same host OS, guest, memory, virtual disk, graphics configuration, and workload. Product feature lists are not performance test results, so claims that one is simply “faster on Ryzen” go beyond the available evidence.

Performance depends on the job being run and how the VM is configured. Relevant variables include the host OS and build, hypervisor version, guest OS, vCPU and memory allocations, storage controller and underlying drive, graphics needs, and background virtualization features such as Hyper-V or VBS. For CPU-bound, storage-heavy, graphics-intensive, and nested workloads, the limiting factor may differ.
Oracle’s VirtualBox 7.2 documentation says that when the host CPU supports nested paging—AMD-V—or Intel EPT, enabling nested paging alongside hardware virtualization can provide a significant performance increase. That is Oracle’s qualitative guidance for VirtualBox; it supplies no quantified gain and does not show that VirtualBox outperforms Workstation.

If performance determines your choice, test both products on the actual Ryzen PC with the same guest and workload. Record the Ryzen model, firmware and SVM state, host OS/build, hypervisor versions, guest OS, assigned vCPU and memory, virtual disk controller and storage, graphics setup, Hyper-V/VBS status, benchmark workload, repetitions, and results. Without those controls, a result may reflect configuration differences rather than an inherent product advantage.

What changes if you need nested virtualization?
Nested virtualization means a guest VM can itself use hardware virtualization—for example, to run another hypervisor or a workload that needs virtualization support. It is a separate requirement from simply running a conventional Windows or Linux guest. If you need it for a development environment, Kubernetes setup, or WSL 2 inside a VM, verify the exact product version, guest OS, host OS, and feature combination before building your workflow.

VirtualBox 7.2 exposes a Nested VT-x/AMD-V setting for passing through virtualization capabilities. Workstation’s supported nested scenarios are more limited, and Broadcom says features requiring nesting in a Workstation VM cannot currently be enabled while Hyper-V is enabled on the host. Do not assume the same limitation applies to every ordinary Workstation VM or every Ryzen configuration; it concerns nested features in the stated Hyper-V host scenario.
How can Hyper-V or WSL 2 affect the choice?
Hyper-V changes how hardware virtualization extensions are managed. Microsoft explains that a hypervisor controls those extensions unless it exposes them to a nested guest. Microsoft also warns that non-Microsoft virtualization applications running inside Hyper-V virtual machines are unsupported and likely to fail. Those points describe specific virtualization arrangements; they do not prove that every Ryzen PC with Hyper-V-related Windows features enabled will have the same compatibility or performance problem.

Before troubleshooting a VM, identify whether Hyper-V, WSL 2, or VBS is active on the host and whether your workload needs nested virtualization. Then consult the current vendor guidance for that combination. If the issue is a nested Workstation guest with Hyper-V enabled, Broadcom’s documented restriction is directly relevant; for an ordinary VM, diagnose the actual error rather than assuming that restriction is the cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which should you choose for your Ryzen PC?
- Choose based on your host and workflow: confirm the supported host OS, guest OS, devices, and VM image requirements for the release you plan to use.
- Prioritize exact nested-virtualization support if a guest must run its own hypervisor or another virtualization-dependent environment. Check the Hyper-V status of the host as part of that decision.
- Compare the surrounding tools you need: virtual networking, USB and graphics, snapshots or clones, vSphere connectivity, and migration requirements can matter more than small performance differences that have not been established for your workload.
- Check licensing for your use: Broadcom’s Workstation Pro personal-use statement is dated May 6, 2024, and commercial use is described as requiring a paid license. Verify the current terms directly before relying on them.
For a standard VM, the available evidence supports compatibility checks—not a universal Ryzen ranking. For a nested VM, Hyper-V interaction and the exact documented feature combination are especially important. If raw speed is decisive, compare both on your own host with a controlled workload.
