There is no single best Raspberry Pi replacement for every project. The Orange Pi 5 Plus and Radxa ROCK 5B family are compact ARM single-board computers; the ODROID-H4 family uses Intel x86 processors and offers SATA expansion. Choose by software compatibility, storage and network connections, project-specific I/O, and the cost of a complete build—not processor specifications alone.

Which Raspberry Pi alternative fits your project?

Board family Architecture and documented features Most relevant use Key qualification
Orange Pi 5 Plus Rockchip RK3588; four Cortex-A76 and four Cortex-A55 cores; Mali-G610 GPU; selectable 4, 8, or 16 GB LPDDR4/4X; M.2 2280 NVMe slot; dual 2.5GbE ports. Compact server or DIY build that can use its documented NVMe, Ethernet, or GPIO interfaces. Check the live downloads page for current OS images and board revisions. Specifications are not independent performance or emulator tests. Orange Pi 5 Plus official page.
Radxa ROCK 5B / ROCK 5B+ RK3588 family with Cortex-A76/A55 cores, Mali G610 graphics, multiple RAM configurations, multiple display outputs, and manufacturer-stated NPU capability up to 6 TOPS. ARM projects where its particular memory, display, and system options fit. Confirm the exact 5B or 5B+ specification before buying; features vary by model. Radxa lists Debian and Android and mentions third-party systems including Armbian and FydeOS. Radxa ROCK 5B documentation and Radxa ROCK 5B product page.
ODROID-H4 family Intel N97 in H4 and H4+ models; Intel N305 in H4 Ultra; DDR5 SO-DIMM slot, M.2 socket, four SATA data connectors, and dual Ethernet, according to Hardkernel. x86 software needs or a storage-heavy build that benefits from SATA connections. Memory and storage are separately sourced; budget for power, cooling, and an enclosure as needed. Confirm current model availability. Hardkernel ODROID-H4 product page.

How to choose for a home server

Start with the drives, network, and software your server must support. The Orange Pi 5 Plus documents an M.2 NVMe slot and dual 2.5GbE ports. Hardkernel lists an M.2 socket, four SATA data connectors, and dual Ethernet for the ODROID-H4 family. Those interfaces distinguish the options, but they do not establish real-world throughput or the number of drives a complete build can power; check the board documentation and the requirements of your drives and enclosure.

  • Choose Orange Pi 5 Plus if its M.2 NVMe and dual 2.5GbE interfaces suit the build and your server software is supported on the board’s ARM system.
  • Consider ODROID-H4 if you need x86 application compatibility or want SATA data connections. Account for separately sourced memory and storage, plus the rest of the system.
  • Check the full operating cost and build: operating-system and container support, cooling, power supply, case, adapters, storage, and regional stock. The cited product pages do not provide measured power draw, application benchmarks, or a complete system cost.

What to check for retro gaming

Do not choose a board for retro gaming on CPU or GPU specifications alone. The cited official sources do not establish a current emulator compatibility matrix or tested performance for particular games or console generations. Before buying, verify that the exact board revision supports the operating system, emulator, graphics drivers, controllers, and display you plan to use. Treat any specific console-generation performance claim as unverified unless it is backed by testing for that exact setup.

What to check for DIY projects

For GPIO-based projects, pin mapping and software support matter more than a board’s general-purpose reputation. Orange Pi lists a 40-pin header with UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, PWM, and GPIO functions. Confirm the pinout for your exact board revision and check that your chosen OS image and libraries support the interfaces you need. Radxa’s documentation identifies board and system options, but you should validate the particular header, camera, display, and library requirements against the exact ROCK 5B model before committing to a design.

  • Match required pins and buses to the board’s documented pinout.
  • Check board dimensions and the fit of any case, display, camera, or other add-on.
  • Verify that the required libraries and OS image support the hardware interfaces your project uses.

Compare the complete setup, not just the board

These options differ in architecture and interfaces, and a board price alone would not describe a working system. Before settling on one, check the following for your specific workload:
