If 1080p gaming is the priority, a Windows desktop with a discrete graphics card is the clearest Mac mini alternative to consider. AMD describes its Radeon RX 7600 as a desktop GPU designed for 1080p gaming. It is only a graphics card, however—not a complete computer. Choose a finished PC or plan for the compatible components needed to build one.
Why a gaming desktop is the strongest alternative
A desktop built around a discrete GPU is a more direct route to a gaming-focused Windows system than choosing a small general-purpose computer based on its processor specifications alone. It also gives you access to Windows game and launcher support, while allowing you to choose a case size and upgrade path that suit your needs.
The RX 7600 is one concrete component to investigate. AMD lists 8 GB of GDDR6 memory and positions the card for 1080p gaming. AMD also reports average frame rates of 178 FPS in Apex Legends, 125 FPS in Fortnite, and 62 FPS in The Last of Us Part I at High settings. These are AMD’s own figures, accessed in 2026; they are not independent test results and are not a direct comparison with a Mac mini or another graphics card. A graphics card is not a complete Mac mini replacement
Buying an RX 7600 alone does not provide a working desktop. A build needs a compatible CPU, motherboard, memory, storage, case, power supply, and operating system. If you do not want to select and assemble parts, compare complete Windows desktops instead; the available evidence does not establish a particular prebuilt model as the best choice.

How the Mac mini compares on paper
Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specifications list a 10-core GPU for the M4 configuration and a 16-core GPU for the standard M4 Pro configuration. Apple also lists 16 GB of unified memory for M4 and 24 GB for M4 Pro, with configurable options described on its specifications page. These core and memory counts describe configurations; they do not show how a particular game performs. Other GPU to compare: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060
The RTX 5060 is another discrete desktop GPU worth including when you compare gaming PCs. NVIDIA lists Blackwell architecture, 8 GB of GDDR7 memory, and 145 W total graphics power. Those specifications alone do not establish how it performs against the RX 7600: the cited NVIDIA material does not provide a matched game-and-settings comparison. Choose by the games and the whole system
Before choosing a Mac mini alternative, check the games you actually play and how you obtain them. Confirm that each title and its launcher work on the operating system you plan to use. For performance, compare independent benchmarks for the same game, resolution, graphics preset, and test method; a vendor’s result or a GPU specification is not a substitute for that comparison.
- Complete-system cost: Compare the price of a finished desktop—or every required build component—not just the graphics card. Current prices are not established here.
- Space, cooling, and noise: A desktop’s case and cooling system affect its footprint and operating noise. Check the specific system rather than assuming a gaming PC will match the Mac mini’s compact form.
- Power: Check the power supply and the complete PC’s requirements. NVIDIA lists 145 W total graphics power for the RTX 5060, but that figure is not the power requirement of an entire computer.
- Upgrades: A desktop may let you replace components, but what can be upgraded depends on the chosen case, motherboard, power supply, and other parts.
- Work outside gaming: If your other work depends on macOS, weigh that need against Windows game and launcher compatibility before switching computers.
When the Mac mini still makes sense
The M4 Mac mini remains a reasonable option if you want a small macOS desktop and gaming is only one part of its role. Apple’s published specifications identify its chip, GPU-core counts, memory configurations, and display outputs, but do not establish the performance or availability of any particular game. Check support for your own titles and independent benchmarks before treating it as a gaming substitute.
