Mission Control helps you find an open window, Spaces give you separate desktops for different work, and Stage Manager keeps a current app or group of apps prominent while leaving recently used apps within reach. They are built-in macOS window-management features, and you can use them separately or together.
How the three features organize your Mac
| Feature | What it organizes | How other work stays accessible | How you switch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mission Control | Open windows on the current desktop, plus Spaces and full-screen arrangements in the Spaces bar | Windows appear together in an overview | Select a window or Space in the overview |
| Spaces | Windows divided among separate desktops | Other desktops remain separate until you switch to them | Use a shortcut, gesture, or Mission Control |
| Stage Manager | The current app or a group of apps | Recently used apps and groups appear along the left side | Click an app or group, or bring a group forward |
What Mission Control does
Mission Control provides an overview of open windows on the current desktop, arranged so you can spot and select the one you need. The Spaces bar at the top can also show desktop Spaces, full-screen apps, and Split View arrangements. With more than one display, Mission Control shows windows and Spaces associated with the display you are using. Apple’s Mission Control guide documents the available controls.
Open Mission Control and find an app window
Press Control–Up Arrow or the Mission Control key. Select the window you want from the overview. To see windows for the app you are currently using, press Control–Down Arrow to open App Exposé. If these shortcuts do not match your setup, check Keyboard settings; Mission Control shortcuts and gestures can be changed in Keyboard, Trackpad, or Mouse settings. Apple also documents trackpad and Magic Mouse gestures, but neither a trackpad nor a mouse gesture is required.
What Spaces do
Spaces are additional desktops, each with its own set of windows. They are useful when you want to keep different kinds of work apart—for example, one desktop for a project and another for communication—rather than see every window together. Apple documents a maximum of 16 Spaces.

Create, switch, and move windows between Spaces
- Open Mission Control and use its Spaces controls to create another desktop.
- Switch Spaces with Control–Left Arrow or Control–Right Arrow, a trackpad or Magic Mouse gesture, or by selecting a Space thumbnail in Mission Control.
- To move a window, drag it to a screen edge or drag it onto the target Space in Mission Control.
You can assign an app to all desktops, the current desktop, a desktop on a particular display, or no fixed desktop. A Mission Control setting can also make the Mac switch to a Space where the selected app already has open windows. If you delete a Space, its open windows move to another Space.
What Stage Manager does
Stage Manager emphasizes the work you are doing now: the active work sits in the center, while recently used apps appear along the left edge. Click an app to switch to it, resize or overlap windows, or drag apps together to make a group. Selecting that group brings its apps forward together. Unlike Spaces, Stage Manager does not primarily separate work into different desktops; it keeps a current working set prominent and makes recent apps and groups accessible at the side. Apple’s Stage Manager guide describes its controls.

Turn Stage Manager on and adjust what appears
Enable Stage Manager in Control Center or in System Settings under Desktop & Dock. Its settings let you hide or show recent apps, choose whether switching to an app shows all its windows or only one at a time, and control whether desktop items appear. If Stage Manager cannot be turned on, Apple’s guidance is to enable “Displays have separate Spaces” in Mission Control settings. Apple’s Mission Control settings guide covers that display option.

- Choose Mission Control when you need to locate an open window or get an overview of the current desktop and its Spaces.
- Choose Spaces when you want distinct desktops for different tasks or sets of windows.
- Choose Stage Manager when you want to focus on one app or a small group while keeping recently used apps easy to reach.
These features can complement one another: Mission Control is an overview, Spaces are separate desktops, and Stage Manager is a way to keep a current working set in view. There is no single arrangement that suits every workflow.
