To reduce Raspberry Pi memory use, first check available memory rather than relying on free, then close memory-heavy apps or remove unneeded workload. If the Pi is a headless device, boot to the command line or use Raspberry Pi OS Lite to avoid running a desktop. Choose 32-bit only if it suits your board and software; lowering swap use is a cautious, higher-risk adjustment, not a general fix.

Check whether your Raspberry Pi is actually short of memory

Open a terminal and run:

free -h
htop

In the free -h output, look at available as well as free. Linux uses spare RAM for buffers and cache; that memory is counted as used but can be reclaimed when applications need it. The available figure is a more useful quick estimate of memory that can be used to start applications without swapping.

In htop, sort the process list by memory use and identify which applications or services are largest. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s Raspberry Pi 5 1GB example shows desktop components such as labwc, Xwayland, wf-panel and pcmanfm --desktop among the main memory users; opening Chromium and Thonny adds further pressure. The magazine reports 266MB used and 720MB available after booting that example to CLI, and says the desktop interface takes up a third of available RAM in its desktop example. Those figures are specific to that board and setup, not benchmarks for every Pi or OS installation. Source: Raspberry Pi Official Magazine.

The magazine says htop is installed by default with Raspberry Pi OS, but availability can vary by installation. If the command is missing, use the system’s installed package manager to install it, or inspect processes with tools already available on your OS.

Remove workload you do not need

Start with the applications you recognize and can safely close. A browser with many tabs, an editor, or other simultaneously open desktop applications can add memory pressure. Check the memory-sorted process list before stopping anything; do not disable an unfamiliar service simply because it appears near the top.

  • Close unused applications and browser tabs.
  • Review applications configured to start automatically and remove only those you understand and do not need.
  • For a service, establish what depends on it before stopping or uninstalling it. There is no universal safe list of Raspberry Pi services to disable.

For a headless Pi, avoid running a graphical desktop

If your project does not need a local monitor, mouse or desktop applications, running without the graphical environment is often the most direct way to reduce baseline memory use.

Change an existing installation to boot to the command line

  1. Open Raspberry Pi’s Control Centre or run sudo raspi-config.
  2. Use the installed menu’s System or Boot options to choose a command-line boot target. Menu wording can change between releases, so follow the choices shown on your system.
  3. Reboot the Pi for the boot-target change to take effect.

For a new headless setup, Raspberry Pi OS Lite is the official command-line-only edition without a desktop environment. Raspberry Pi describes Lite for command-line use, including headless servers and embedded systems. The downloads page lists current editions and can change over time; check it when choosing an image. Choose 32-bit or 64-bit for compatibility, not as a guaranteed RAM fix

Raspberry Pi says its 32-bit OS uses less memory and may be more compatible with older hardware and software. The 64-bit edition is intended for supported newer boards, can handle more RAM and offers more compute for suitable workloads. The sources do not establish a universal percentage of memory saved by switching to 32-bit.

Before reinstalling or migrating, confirm that the board supports the selected edition and that the applications, libraries and hardware you rely on work with it. A 32-bit system is not automatically the better choice if your workload needs 64-bit software or the capabilities of a newer system. Raspberry Pi OS documentation.

Lowering swappiness is a trade-off, not a first-line fix

Swap uses storage as overflow when RAM is tight; it is much slower than physical RAM and does not make a memory-constrained desktop equivalent to one with more RAM. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine gives 60 as its example vm.swappiness value and shows 10 as a temporary setting:

cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
sudo sysctl vm.swappiness=10

The sysctl command changes the value for the current running session; it is not permanent. A lower value favors keeping pages in RAM rather than swapping, which can reduce swap activity, but can also increase the risk of out-of-memory (OOM) failures when applications need more RAM. The magazine explicitly warns that the change is not permanent and carries OOM risk. Make this adjustment only when you understand the workload and have observed a reason to change it; do not treat it as a blanket performance fix. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s swappiness example.

When tuning is not enough, match the board to the workload

If you need a graphical desktop and its applications still exhaust available memory after reasonable cleanup, the limitation may be the board’s RAM rather than a setting. For its Raspberry Pi 5 1GB desktop scenario, Raspberry Pi Official Magazine recommends a 2GB-or-higher model; it recommends the 1GB model for electronics and maker projects especially when the desktop is off and the Pi is used from the CLI. This is specific guidance for those use cases, not a universal minimum for every project. A board’s RAM is not upgraded by adding a memory module, so moving to a higher-memory model means replacing the board. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s use-case recommendation.

Do not use total_mem to solve ordinary memory pressure

Raspberry Pi documentation describes total_mem as a way to limit the memory capacity the Pi uses; its example makes a 4GB Pi 4B behave as if it had 1GB. That setting removes memory from the operating system’s available pool. It may be useful for specialized testing or configuration, but it does not free RAM or solve a shortage.
