If Mission Control opens slowly or your Mac seems to hesitate when changing desktops, start by identifying exactly which action is delayed. Check the Mission Control settings, compare keyboard and gesture navigation, and observe system activity before making larger changes. Apple documents these controls and diagnostics, but does not identify one setting as a guaranteed fix for Mission Control or Spaces lag.
Identify what is slow
Repeat the same action a few times and note where the delay occurs. Opening Mission Control, moving between Spaces, switching to an app on another Space, and using a full-screen app can involve different behaviors. Also note whether the delay happens only with a particular gesture or when using an external display.
Record your Mac model and macOS version along with the steps that reproduce the delay. Apple’s documentation does not provide a symptom-specific test for Mission Control lag, so these observations help distinguish a window-management behavior from broader system slowness or an input-method problem.
Review Mission Control and Spaces settings
Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock, then find the Mission Control section. Labels or placement may vary by macOS release. Change only one option at a time, repeat the action that seemed slow, and restore the original setting if it does not help.

- Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use: When enabled, macOS can change the order of Spaces based on recent use. If the desktop order seems to shift unexpectedly, turn it off temporarily and check whether navigation is more predictable.
- When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application: When enabled, switching apps can take you to a different Space where that app has open windows. If the apparent delay happens during app switching, test with this option off.
- Group windows by application: This changes how windows are grouped in Mission Control. Try changing it only if the way windows appear there seems related to the problem.
- Displays have separate Spaces: For a Mac connected to multiple displays, this controls whether each display has its own Spaces. If you use more than one display, note the current setting and test the same navigation with it changed.
Automatic Space rearrangement and app-triggered movement can make switching feel unexpected, but Apple does not say disabling either feature will improve performance. See Apple’s guides to working in multiple spaces and changing Desktop & Dock settings.
Compare keyboard, Mission Control, and gesture navigation
Try more than one way to perform the same action. Keyboard navigation can help determine whether the delay is associated with a gesture or input device rather than Space switching itself.

- Press the Mission Control key on your keyboard, if available, or press Control–Up Arrow to open Mission Control.
- Use Control–Left Arrow or Control–Right Arrow to move between Spaces.
- Open Mission Control and select a Space from the Spaces bar.
- If your Mac supports them, test the trackpad or mouse gestures documented for your device and macOS version.
If keyboard navigation responds promptly but a gesture does not, check the input device and its settings before assuming Spaces itself is responsible. This comparison is a troubleshooting technique, not a confirmed Apple diagnosis. Apple’s instructions for Spaces, Multi-Touch gestures, and Mission Control describe controls that can vary by device and macOS version.
Check whether the Mac is generally sluggish
If other actions are slow too, check system activity while the problem is happening. Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor. Look at CPU activity and memory use, and note whether an identifiable app is unusually busy or unresponsive at the same time as the lag.

Apple documents Activity Monitor as a way to inspect activity and locate troublesome apps or processes when a Mac is sluggish. If a known app is unresponsive, save work where possible and close or restart that app first. Do not force quit unfamiliar system processes as a routine troubleshooting step. Activity Monitor can also create a system diagnostics report to share with Apple Support. See Apple’s guides to Activity Monitor, viewing CPU activity, and running system diagnostics.
How to interpret what you see
- If an app is busy or unresponsive during the delay, record its name and whether closing it changes the symptom.
- If CPU or memory activity looks ordinary, that does not rule out a Mission Control, input-device, or software issue; it only means you did not identify an obvious concurrent load.
- General system load can coincide with sluggishness, but the cited Apple guidance does not establish it as a specific cause of Mission Control or Spaces lag.
Use Safe Mode to check startup software
If the issue persists, test whether software that loads at startup may be involved. Apple says starting a Mac in Safe Mode can help identify whether an issue is caused by software that loads as the Mac starts. First determine whether your Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor, then follow the matching steps in Apple’s Safe Mode instructions; the startup procedure differs by processor type.

Repeat the same navigation test in Safe Mode and compare it with normal startup. A changed result is useful diagnostic evidence, but it does not by itself identify a particular login item, utility, or other software as the cause.
