Before resetting anything, check whether Mission Control is actually failing to open or whether a setting is changing how your Desktop Spaces behave. Start with the keyboard shortcut or gesture, review Mission Control options in System Settings, and use Mission Control itself to repair an individual Space. Restarting Dock is a later, low-impact troubleshooting attempt; deleting Dock preferences is a broad, anecdotal reset that can erase custom Dock settings and pinned icons.
First, check what is and is not working
Press Control–Up Arrow, or use the key configured for Mission Control, to see whether the overview opens. If you normally use a trackpad gesture, test that too. Mission Control can also be opened with a mouse or by dragging a window to the top of the screen; its controls can be changed in settings. See Apple’s guide to viewing windows and Spaces in Mission Control.
If you use more than one display, enter Mission Control on each display before concluding that Spaces are missing. Apple explains that a Mission Control view opened on a second display shows only the windows and Spaces for that display. A different-looking overview on another monitor can therefore be expected behavior, not a broken Spaces setup.
If the overview opens but desktops seem to move, or choosing an app switches you to another desktop, check the settings below before attempting a reset. Those behaviors can be controlled by Mission Control preferences.

Review Mission Control settings
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock, then scroll to the Mission Control section. Check these options against the behavior you want:
- Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use: If enabled, Space order can change as you use desktops. Turn it off if you want the order to stay fixed.
- When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application: When enabled, selecting an app can take you to a different Space where that app has open windows. This is a setting effect, not by itself evidence of corruption.
- Displays have separate Spaces: This affects how desktops and Mission Control behave across multiple displays. Apple notes that it also affects Dock availability on displays and is required for Split View on other displays or Stage Manager.
- Keyboard shortcuts and trackpad or mouse gestures: Confirm the assigned controls match what you are pressing or swiping.
- Drag windows to top of screen to enter Mission Control: Check this option if you rely on dragging a window to open the overview.
Apple describes these controls in its Mission Control settings guide. Prefer changing a relevant option here over using Terminal to alter preferences.

Use Mission Control to restore or navigate a Space
If Mission Control opens and only one desktop is misplaced or missing, use its Spaces bar rather than resetting all Dock settings. Apple’s guide to working in multiple Spaces covers creating, navigating, assigning apps to, and deleting Spaces.
- Navigate: Use a three- or four-finger swipe on a trackpad, a Magic Mouse swipe, Control–Left Arrow or Control–Right Arrow, or click a Space thumbnail.
- Create a Space: Open Mission Control and use its Spaces controls to add a desktop.
- Remove a Space: In the Spaces bar, point to the Space and use its close control. Apple says that if the Space contains open windows, they are moved to another Space.
This approach is local and visible: it lets you recreate or remove the specific desktop you need without discarding unrelated Dock configuration.

Restart Dock only if the settings and Spaces checks do not help
Dock is a macOS process involved in the desktop interface. Restarting it is commonly suggested in community troubleshooting, but Apple’s help pages do not present it as an official Mission Control reset or guarantee that it will fix a problem.
A Sonoma-era Reddit discussion includes one user report that force-quitting Dock and Dock Extra restored Dock, app switching, and Mission Control. Another user said killall Dock did not solve their issue. Treat a Dock restart as a reversible troubleshooting attempt that may help, not a reliable cure. If you are comfortable using Terminal, the commonly suggested process-restart command is:

Dock should relaunch automatically. If it does not, sign out and back in or restart your Mac. The reported results are anecdotal community experience, not an Apple-published repair procedure; see the community discussion of Mission Control and Spaces problems.
Use preference resets only for a specific reason
Target the automatic Space-rearrangement preference
If the specific problem is automatic Space rearrangement and the System Settings toggle does not resolve it, a third-party macOS defaults reference documents the mru-spaces preference key. Its documented procedure deletes that individual key and then restarts Dock:

defaults delete com.apple.dock mru-spaces && killall Dock
This is third-party guidance, not an Apple-published reset. The reference lists testing from Mojave through Sequoia, so its documented coverage does not establish behavior on later macOS versions. The corresponding user-facing option in Desktop & Dock is the safer first choice. See the third-party reference for the mru-spaces preference.
Avoid deleting all Dock preferences as a first-line fix
In the same Sonoma-era community discussion, a user reported running defaults delete com.apple.dock and killall -9 Dock to reset Dock settings. The user described it as a “shotgun approach”; the reported result included losing Dock settings and pinned icons. This is not an Apple-supported Mission Control reset, and it is much broader than changing one preference.
Do not use the full-domain deletion unless you have a clear reason and are prepared to rebuild your Dock setup. If you choose to proceed, first record or back up your Dock arrangement and pinned apps. A settings adjustment or a targeted change is preferable when it addresses the actual symptom.

After changing a setting or restarting Dock, reopen Mission Control and test the control you configured, as well as Control–Left Arrow and Control–Right Arrow. Check the Spaces bar on each display separately, and select an app to see whether the option to switch to a Space with that app’s open windows explains the change. These are practical checks based on Apple’s documented controls and Space behavior, not a formal Apple post-reset test protocol.
