Pre-recorded videos can play on a Twitch channel, but Twitch does not consider them live. Its Rerun guidance describes Reruns as “non-live content that you can play on your channel.” If you rebroadcast a recording, label it clearly as a Rerun rather than presenting it as a live broadcast or live interaction.

How to replay a video on Twitch as a Rerun

Twitch’s documented approach is to capture and stream a VOD through an encoder. A VOD, or Past Broadcast, is a recording of a previous live stream; it is not the same as a new live broadcast.

  1. Save the original broadcast if you need a VOD. In Twitch’s stream settings, enable Past Broadcast storage. Twitch’s VOD help page lists retention of 60 days for Partners, Prime users, and Twitch Turbo users, and 14 days for Affiliates. These are Twitch-reported retention periods and may change.
  2. Send the recording through an encoder. Twitch’s Rerun instructions describe capturing and streaming a VOD using an encoder of your choice.
  3. Mark and disclose the replay. In the Edit Stream Info panel, select the “Rerun” checkbox. Start the stream title and the go-live notification with “[Rerun]”. Twitch says selecting the checkbox adds a Rerun tag.

The disclosure matters because viewers may otherwise expect to interact with a creator who is broadcasting live. Twitch warns that failing to label a Rerun can damage community trust.

Reruns are separate from simulcasting

A Rerun is recorded content replayed on your Twitch channel. Simulcasting means broadcasting the same live stream to multiple platforms at the same time. Twitch’s simulcasting guidelines apply unless a creator has an agreement requiring exclusivity. They prohibit using Twitch to drive viewers to a concurrent live stream on another platform. Links showing that you are present elsewhere are permitted, but actively urging viewers to leave Twitch for that other live stream is not.

Check video and audio rights before replaying

Replaying a file does not remove your responsibility for the material in it. Twitch says creators must ensure streamed and recorded videos do not infringe someone else’s work. Twitch may detect copyrighted audio and mute sections of VODs or Clips, but the platform says detection is not foolproof and does not replace permission or other authority to use the material. Clear rights for both video and audio before you stream a replay. See Twitch’s DMCA guidelines.
