Availability depends on the service’s regional rights and blackout rules, how it checks your location, whether it detects the connection method, and whether your device supports the setup. A VPN can encrypt traffic, while Smart DNS may be convenient on some smart TVs—but Smart DNS does not provide VPN-style encryption or hide your IP address. Check the specific service’s rules for your destination before you leave.
How VPNs and Smart DNS differ
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a VPN server and can encrypt that traffic. A streaming service may still detect or block VPN use, and encryption does not make you anonymous or establish that a stream is available under the service’s rights rules.
Smart DNS changes how certain location-related domain lookups are handled. Some providers describe it as a way to use region-limited content on devices such as smart TVs, but support depends on the streaming service. It is not a substitute for VPN encryption: SmartyDNS says its Smart DNS does not encrypt traffic or hide the user’s IP address. That is a provider’s description, not an independent performance test.
At a glance: which trade-offs matter?
| Decision | VPN | Smart DNS |
|---|---|---|
| Sports-stream access | A service may flag or block it. NBA League Pass says VPNs and proxies are unsupported and may prevent playback. | May work with some services, but compatibility is service-specific; do not assume a particular sports service supports it. |
| Encryption on public Wi-Fi | Relevant when you want encrypted traffic; it does not guarantee anonymity. | Does not provide VPN-style encryption, according to SmartyDNS. |
| Device setup | Check whether your VPN provider supports your device and offers a setup for it. | NordVPN identifies smart TVs as a possible use case, but says Smart DNS may not work with all streaming services. |
| Rights and blackouts | Does not change the service’s underlying regional rights or blackout policy. | Does not establish that a stream is authorized or available in your destination. |
| Separate sports subscription | A VPN does not replace a paid sports subscription. | SmartyDNS says its service does not replace a paid streaming subscription. |
Check availability and blackout rules before traveling
Start with the sports service, not the networking tool. NBA League Pass says availability and content rights can vary by region. ESPN says blackout enforcement can depend on the location from which a user accesses ESPN or an applicable third-party service. Those rules can affect a game even when your account and device are otherwise working.

When NBA League Pass reports a location error
NBA’s Help Center says VPNs and proxies are unsupported and may prevent content from loading. Its guidance for error 7027 also identifies private relays and similar location-obscuring services, as well as some DNS services and network configurations, as possible causes.

- Check the NBA League Pass error guidance at “7027 Error When Watching League Pass”.
- If you see error 7027, disable a VPN, proxy, private relay, or similar location-obscuring service, as NBA recommends.
- If the error remains, review NBA’s notes about DNS services and network configurations. Changing a DNS setting may not resolve the issue if the service still cannot determine your location.
- Check the event’s regional availability and blackout rules rather than assuming that a connection change will make the stream available.
NBA’s Help Center page, updated September 13, 2026, states: “Because NBA League Pass availability and content rights can vary by region, VPNs and proxies are not supported and may prevent content from loading properly.”

Consider a VPN when encryption matters
If you want encrypted traffic while using public Wi-Fi, a VPN is the relevant option of these two. Before travel, verify that the provider supports your device and that the sports service’s rules allow the connection. Netflix’s help documentation addresses VPN and proxy detection, and NBA League Pass explicitly warns that VPNs may prevent playback. Neither fact establishes whether a particular provider will work with a particular sports stream.

Consider Smart DNS only when your service and device support it
Smart DNS may be useful on a device where a provider offers a setup, but provider support for the feature does not prove compatibility with a particular sports service. NordVPN cautions that its Smart DNS may not work with all streaming services. Confirm current service-specific and device-specific support before relying on it.
Use the official service’s options if neither fits
If the destination’s rules, a service’s location checks, or your device make either method unsuitable, look for the sports service’s officially supported viewing options for that location. Keep any required subscription active: Smart DNS does not supply one, and a VPN does not grant access rights.

What to verify before departure
- Destination and event: Confirm that the service offers the competition or match in the country you will visit and check blackout restrictions.
- Connection rules: Read the service’s current guidance on VPNs, proxies, DNS services, and location errors.
- Device support: Confirm that your chosen method has instructions for the device you plan to watch on; compatibility is not universal.
- Privacy goal: If you need encryption on public Wi-Fi, Smart DNS is not a substitute for a VPN.
- Subscription: Make sure you have the separate sports-streaming subscription the service requires.
