To create a table in Google Sheets on a computer, select a cell range and choose Format > Convert to table. Sheets applies table structure and formatting; you can then set column types and adjust the table’s appearance. To begin with a template instead, choose Insert > Pre-built table. These steps follow Google’s computer-based instructions; menu labels may differ by device or account.
Convert a range into a table
- Open the spreadsheet and select the range you want to use. It can contain existing data or be an empty range.
- Choose Format > Convert to table from the menu bar.
- Review the columns and choose an appropriate type for each one. For example, set a date column to Date, or use Dropdown when entries should come from a controlled set of choices.
Google introduced Sheets tables in 2024 as a way to add structure and formatting to spreadsheet ranges. Its current table help page describes the conversion workflow and available table features.
Start from a pre-built table
- Choose Insert > Pre-built table.
- Select a template in the sidebar to add a ready-made structure, then adapt its columns and contents to your data.
Google lists project tracking, event planning, and inventory management as examples of tasks suited to tables.
Choose column types that match your data
A column type helps Sheets format and organize the entries in that column. Google says Sheets can warn when an entry does not match the selected type. Available types include:

- None, which leaves the column flexible for mixed data
Some types can display placeholder chips. If you do not want them, turn them off from the relevant column menu. See Google’s table documentation for the column-type controls.
Format the table’s appearance
Open the menu beside the table name, or choose Format > Table formatting, to adjust table-level appearance. Depending on the controls shown, you can change row height, alternating colors, header or footer styling, and default styles. The table menu also includes settings for the table range and header color.

- Alternating colors or gridlines can make rows and columns easier to scan.
- Condensed view reduces the visual density of the table.
- A footer provides a place for a summary row.
Google announced these advanced formatting controls on March 19, 2025, and said they were available to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google account users. That announcement describes rollout availability; it is not an account-by-account guarantee. For current controls, use the menu in your spreadsheet. Google’s announcement lists the options.
Format individual cells or the whole spreadsheet
For appearance changes that are not specific to a table, select cells and use the toolbar to change the font, text color, fill color, borders, alignment, or wrapping. Use Format > Number for number and date formats, and Format > Theme to adjust spreadsheet-wide styling. Google’s spreadsheet formatting help covers these controls.

This is a workflow distinction, not a performance claim: both approaches let you organize spreadsheet data, but tables add named structure and table-specific features.
Use table names and references
Tables support references using table and column names. For example, =SUM(DeptSales[Sales Amount]) sums the Sales Amount column in the table named DeptSales. Google says these references update when rows are added to or removed from the table, which can make formulas easier to maintain as the table changes.

Table names have restrictions: they cannot be TRUE or FALSE, use A1 or R1C1 notation, start with a number, exceed 255 characters, or contain special characters other than underscores. Spaces in table names become underscores in formulas. Google’s table help page also covers table views and group-by views.

If you want to keep the contents but remove the table style, open the table menu and choose Revert to unformatted data. Google describes this as removing the table style while leaving the data unchanged. Do not confuse it with Delete table, a separate command in the same menu.
